Tigers claim sixth-straight win against Blazers
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A Jessica Lisi goal in the 98th minute of action pushed Memphis women's soccer to a 1-0 victory against UAB on Thursday night at BBVA Compass Field.
With two minutes left in the first overtime, Memphis, who outshot the Blazers 24-2 throughout the evening, found one final offensive push when senior Catherine Levasseur kept a UAB clear attempt in the attacking zone. Lisi collected the deflection at the top of the box and rocketed the ball in the lower left corner of the net for the golden goal.
"It's always tough to get a win on the road, so I'm really proud of the girls for that," head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "It was an interesting game tonight. We felt like we dominated in a lot of areas, but the ball just wouldn't fall. We were unlucky with some calls, but the girls showed strong character and they stayed focused."
Memphis (3-1-0) applied pressure early with eight shots in the first half, including four on goal, and dominated possession through the first 45 minutes of play.
The Tigers continued the attack after halftime, collecting five shots in the first 15 minutes of the second half but could not get on the board.
Memphis found a late opportunity after a Elizabeth Woerner fired a shot that found the back of the net in the 82nd minute, but an offside call negated the potential game-winner.
UAB (1-3-0) took control to start the overtime session after a shot and a corner kick, but the Tigers' defensive effort remained strong. Memphis limited the Blazers to just two shots throughout the night with none on goal.
"The defense was solid. They did what they needed to do," Monaghan said. "It was great to see them bounce back and not get their heads down after giving up some goals in our last outing."
Memphis regained control, and after a pair of shots by Clarissa Larisey and Woerner, Lisi broke through with her third goal of the season.
"Sometimes you can lose these games," Monaghan added. "We kept our head up, even though we weren't the most polished tonight when it came to finishing, and we found a way to win."
The Tigers, who won their sixth straight in the all-time series against UAB, also collected a golden-goal victory in last year's 2-1 win in double overtime against the Blazers.
Memphis returns to the pitch Monday against Samford in Birmingham, Ala. Kickoff against the Bulldogs is set for 7 p.m. and can be streamed on ESPN+.
