MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Week No. 2 is nearly complete for the University of Memphis volleyball preseason camp, and it concludes on Saturday with the annual Blue-Gray Scrimmage, which is open to the public. Match time is 1 p.m. (CT) at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
Saturday's scrimmage is the final tune-up for the Tigers, as they open the 2018 campaign Aug. 24-25 with the Memphis Invitational. Memphis welcomes Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Arkansas State and Stephen F. Austin to the Bluff City for the two-day tournament. Action starts Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. (CT) and continues through Saturday night at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
Memphis' Aug. 24 match versus Stephen F. Austin at 7 p.m. (CT) is the first under new head coach Sean Burdette, who took over the program in January.
Burdette's Quick-Takes
Q: How's preseason camp going since last Saturday's first scrimmage?
A: We've worked on a lot of different things, we're spinning a lot of plates right now. We're getting the players acclimated to our systems, our style of play. We're incorporating a lot of new faces, including our setters. We had a good scrimmage (last Saturday), and we've had a long week of practice. We've been pushing pretty hard. We've had some good practices in the latter part of this week. We saw players step up and make plays, and it was really good and exciting volleyball. We had a lot of 6-on-6 activity in our most recent practices, and it got competitive.
Q: Talk about using Saturday's scrimmage as a dress rehearsal for the season opener.
A: It's a way to get our feet wet and experience what a gameday is like. We'll serve-and-pass and have a pregame meal like we do prior to a regular match. We'll go through our full official match warm-up. We'll have music, the scoreboard, everything going so it will be gameday-like as much as possible. Hopefully, we'll get some of those jitters out because every first match you're going to have those nerves.
Q: What are you looking to gain from Saturday's Blue-Gray scrimmage?
A: Saturday's scrimmage is a time for me to stand back and see both sides of court. I want to see who steps up and who decides to get after it. I've been pleased to see everyone contributing in our practices, and it's great to see that team effort.
