Tigers ride eight-run first inning to win
MILLINGTON, Tenn. – Memphis didn't let a 90-minute delay slow them down, blasting UT Martin for eight runs in the first inning en route to a 10-0 seven-inning run-rule win in the Babe Howard Classic Tuesday at USA Stadium.
Drew Talley made his first career start on the mound and was brilliant. The freshman right-hander pitched six scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts, both career highs. He allowed only three hits and one walk in the game.
Memphis exploded for its biggest inning of the season right out of the gate, scoring eight runs in the bottom of the first inning. A significant part of the damage was self-inflicted by UT Martin with four walks, a hit batter and two errors in the inning. The Tigers had four hits in the frame and sent 13 men to the plate.
Carlos Williams legged out an infield single to start the game before back-to-back walks loaded the bases. Alec Trela opened the scoring with an RBI infield single.
Kyle Ouellette was hit by a pitch to drive in another run and keep the bases loaded with nobody out. An RBI groundout by Nick Vaage made the score 3-0 and provided the first out of the inning.
Colton Neel lined a two-run single up the middle to make the score 5-0 and end the day for UT Martin's starting pitcher.
After the Skyhawk reliever came in, Jason Santana walked before a pop up from Williams was dropped to allow a run to score.
Tyler Webb capped off the inning with a two-run single to left field that made the score 8-0.
The Tigers tacked on a run to their lead in the third inning. Jason Santana and Carlos Williams both singled to make the score 9-0.
Memphis made it an even 10-0 in the fifth inning when Webb hit an RBI single that scored Kyle O'Keefe.
Williams finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI. Webb was 2-for-3 with three RBI. Cale Hennemann was the only starter without a hit, but he got on base three times on two walks and a hit batter.
