Tigers score winning run in the eighth
NEW ORLEANS, La. – Memphis scored on a wild pitch in the eighth inning to beat Tulane 3-2 on Sunday at Turchin Stadium. Blake Bennett pitched the final 2 1/3 innings to record the win.
The Tigers (18-34, 4-17 AAC) will return home to host the annual Babe Howard Classic at USA Stadium in Millington, Tenn. Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Memphis will finish the season at home against Wichita State, May 17-19.
Bennett allowed just one base runner in his 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. The win was his third of the season.
Alec Trela was 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored to lead Memphis offensively. Carlos Williams also had a two-hit day from the leadoff spot.
For the third-straight day Memphis grabbed an early lead over Tulane. Tyler Webb doubled with two outs in the first inning and Trela drove him in with an RBI single.
Tulane knotted the score 1-1 in the second inning but an inning-ending double play helped limit the damage.
The Tigers retook the lead in the fourth inning when Colton Neel hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Trela.
The Green Wave tied the game up again in the fifth, hitting a solo home run.
Memphis took the lead back in the eighth inning when Tyler Webb scored on a wild pitch.
Tiger pitching successfully got out of jams all day as Tulane left 12 men on base and loaded the bases three times in the game.
Hunter Smith started for Memphis and pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts. Alex Smith bridged the gap to Bennett, pitching 1 1/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
Despite Sunday's win, the Tigers are eliminated from contention for the American Athletic Conference Tournament.
