Apr 08, 2018 | Softball
Memphis takes two of three from the Pirates after sweeping Friday’s doubleheader
GREENVILLE, N.C. – Early runs by ECU proved to be too much to overcome Sunday afternoon as the University of Memphis softball team fell by a score of 4-1 to the Pirates. The Tigers drop to 29-11 on the year and 5-4 in American Athletic Conference play.
Â
A two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning by ECU gave the Pirates the only lead they needed in the contest. ECU tacked on one more run in the bottom of the third inning before Memphis was able to answer during the next half inning.
Â
Back-to-back walks combined with a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly by Brooke Lee drove in the lone Memphis run of the ball game. ECU added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run.
Â
Mariah Nichols was handed the loss against ECU after putting in 3.0 innings of work and allowing three runs. Delaney Smith extended her hitting streak to a team-high six games with a hit in the sixth inning.Â
