Softball Falls To No. 10 Tennessee In Midstate Classic

Tigers return to conference play this weekend at UCF
COLUMBIA, Tenn. – The University of Memphis softball team was unable to overcome early runs scored by No. 10/13 Tennessee as it fell Tuesday evening to the Lady Vols by a score of 8-0 at the Midstate Classic in Columbia, Tenn. Memphis drops to 29-12 overall with a conference series coming up against UCF this weekend.

Tennessee scored early in the bottom of the first inning on a pair of hits and a sacrifice fly. The Tigers did, however, register the first hit of the ball game earlier in the inning on a single up the middle by Baylee Smith.

The two teams were scoreless for the next two innings until the Lady Vols struck again. A three-run shot in the bottom of the fourth lifted Tennessee to a 5-0 lead over the Tigers. Memphis strung together a walk and a single to have runners in scoring position in the fifth, but was unable to bring Erin Parker home from third.

Tennessee added its final three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to end the contest.

Baylee Smith highlighted the Memphis offense as she went 2-for-3 against the ranked Lady Vols. Brooke Lee and Kyler Trosclair Klatt also registered hits for Memphis. Molly Smith was handed just her fifth loss of the season after putting in 3.2 innings of work for Memphis.

Bottom 1 – Tennessee led off the bottom of the first with a walk. That runner advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single to right center. A double by the next batter put runners on second and third with one out. Tennessee proceeded to record a sacrifice fly to bring in the second run of the game. (2 runs, 2 hits, 0 errors, 1 left on base)
Bottom 4 – A three-run home run with two outs put Tennessee up 5-0 over Memphis. The other two runs that scored reached on a bunt single and a walk. (3 runs, 2 hits, 0 errors, 0 left on base)
Bottom 5 – Tennessee strung together three singles to load the bases with no outs. A walk combined with a single and a fielding error led to three runs crossing the plate. (3 runs, 4 hits, 1 error, 3 left on base)

Memphis resumes conference play this weekend on the road at UCF. The Tigers and the Knights will compete in a three-game series beginning Friday evening at 4:30 p.m. CT.
