Memphis and Mississippi State are meeting for the 16th consecutive season. There have only been three out of the last 30 seasons that the Tigers and Bulldogs have not played (1999, 2001, 2002).
The series between Memphis and Mississippi State has been dead even over the last six seasons, knotted at 3-3. The Tigers won back-to-back games over the Bulldogs in 2014-15 for the first time since the early 1990s.
Wednesday's match-up features a pair of veteran coaches in Daron Schoenrock and Gary Henderson, who will meet as head coaches for the first time despite crossing paths as assistants. Memphis has twice faced Henderson as an assistant coach, in 2004 with Kentucky and last season with Mississippi State.
The Tigers are in the midst of a season-long homestand, playing seven-straight home games starting with last week's Baylor series and ending with a three-game series with ECU this weekend. Memphis hosts back-to-back weekend series at FedExPark for the first time since February.
With back-to-back wins over Arkansas State last week, Memphis has only won two-straight games on three occasions this season. This is the first time since 2005 that the Tigers have failed to win at least three-straight games during the first nine weeks of the season. The 2005 team went the entire season without a winning streak.
The Tigers leading hitter, senior outfielder Tyler Webb is top-25 in the NCAA with 15 doubles. Webb is batting .312 with a team-high 20 runs scored. His 18 RBI are the third-most on the team.
The Tigers lost another close game, falling 8-7 to Cincinnati on April 8. The narrow defeat was the 15th game that Memphis has lost by three runs or less this season. Memphis has six one-run losses, five two-run losses and four three-run losses.
