Tigers snap five-game losing streak
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Danny Denz and Blake Bennett combined to strike out 14 batters and stifle Arkansas State for a 4-1 win Tuesday night at FedExPark. The Tigers (10-23, 1-8 AAC) will square off with the Red Wolves (11-17) again Wednesday night at Tomlinson Stadium.
Denz started and pitched five innings, allowing just one run on two hits. He matched his career high with nine strikeouts.
Bennett came out of the bullpen in the sixth and went the distance. He pitched four innings in relief and allowed just one hit and one walk. Bennett also struck out a career-high five batters and picked up the win.
Arkansas State opened the scoring with a solo home run by Jeremy Brown in the second inning, but that was all that the Tigers would allow in the game.
Memphis tied the game up in the fourth after Kyle Ouellette started the inning with a double. Jason Santana sacrificed Ouellette to third base and a groundout drove him in to make the score 1-1.
Denz got into some trouble in the sixth inning, putting two runners on base with nobody out. The Tigers turned to Bennett out of the bullpen and he got out of the jam unscathed.
The Tigers took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning when Santana hit a sacrifice fly that scored Cale Hennemann.
Memphis tacked on two more runs in the seventh inning on a two-run single by Alec Trela. Ben Brooks legged out an infield single and Kyle O'Keefe reached on an error. The two runners were sacrificed into scoring position by Colton Neel before Trela's single.
