HOUSTON, Texas – Memphis came up short in a 9-3 loss to Houston Sunday at Schroeder Park. The Tigers (8-16, 0-3 AAC) will host nationally ranked Arkansas on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at AutoZone Park.

The Cougars scored in five different frames on 14 hits in the game. Memphis used six different pitchers.

Houston took a 2-0 lead on four hits in the bottom of the second inning. A one-out single was followed by a stolen base and back-to-back bunt singles to get the first run across. A two-out double to right field made the lead 2-0.

The Tigers ended a stretch of 20-consecutive innings without a run, scoring in the top of the third inning. Jason Santana started the inning with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Alec Trela.

After the first two batters reached to start the bottom of the third, Memphis turned to Hunter Smith out of the bullpen and Houston was able to add to its lead. Jared Triolo, who had already driven in four runs in the series, hit a three-run home run to right field to give the Cougars a 5-1 lead.

The Cougars added another run in the fourth, and it was Triolo again. He lined an RBI single up the middle to extend the lead to 6-1.

Memphis got two runs back in the fifth after Kyle O'Keefe homered to start the inning. Tyler Webb hit a sacrifice fly that scored Jason Santana to make the score 6-3.

Houston extended the lead back out to five runs with a two-run home run off of Blake Bennett that made the score 8-3 in the sixth inning. The Cougars tacked on one more run in the seventh to go up 9-3.
