Tigers shutout for second-straight game
HOUSTON, Texas – For the second-consecutive night, Houston's starting pitcher threw a complete-game shutout as Memphis lost 3-0 Saturday at Schroeder Park.
Tigers (8-15) will try to avoid the sweep in the series finale Sunday at 1 p.m.
Jonathan Bowlan tossed six innings and allowed just two earned runs on five hits. He struck out six and issued two walks. Joshua Scheer and Taylor Bobo each pitched scoreless innings in relief.
Houston took a 2-0 lead on a two-out two-run double in the first inning. Jared Triolo, who homered against the Tigers Friday night for the only runs of the game, hit the two-run double in the first.
The Tigers' scoring opportunities were few and far between with just four hits during the game. Keith Stepter singled and stole second base in the third inning but the Tigers were unable to drive him in.
Memphis threatened again in the fifth when Kyle O'Keefe and Stepter both singled. The pair advanced into scoring position on a passed ball but the Tigers were unable to get a run across. Stepter finished the game 2-for-3 with a pair of singles.
Houston added to its lead with an unearned run in the fifth inning. The inning started with a leadoff walk, a sacrifice bunt and a fly out that advanced the runner to third base. A two-out error allowed the run to score and give the Cougars a 3-0 lead.
