Memphis unable to overcome early two-run homer
HOUSTON, Texas – Houston starting pitcher Trey Cumbie tossed a complete game and held Memphis to just three hits as the Tigers lost 2-0 Friday night at Schroeder Park. The Tigers (8-14, 0-1 AAC) got solid pitching but were unable to overcome a two-run homer in the fourth.
Riley Cabral started for Memphis and pitched 5.1 innings, allowing just two runs on six hits. The only runs of the game came on a two-run homer by Jared Triolo in the fourth inning.
The Tigers came close to opening the scoring in the second inning. Alec Trela hammered a double to left-center field to start the inning and moved to third base with one out but Memphis could not drive him in.
Trela finished 1-for-3 with a walk, while Cale Hennemann and Jason Santana were the only other Tigers with hits in the game.
The Tigers defense made sure the Cougars did not add to the lead in the fifth inning. Houston tried to score a runner from first on a double but Evan Bell fielded the ball in left and threw it in to Trela, who gunned down the runner at the plate.
Cabral got into a jam in the sixth inning, putting two runners on base with one out. The Tigers turned to Blake Bennett out of the bullpen and the junior right-hander got out of the jam.
Bennett would stay on the mound the rest of the way. He pitched the final 2.2 innings with no runs allowed and two strikeouts.
Memphis will try to even the series against Houston Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
