Women’s Golf Finishes Fifth at Augusta

Goldenstein posts back-to-back top five finishes for the first time in her career.
MEMPHIS – The Lady Tiger golf team started and ended the final round at the 3M Augusta Invitational in fifth place on Sunday at the Forest Hills Golf Club. Memphis fired a 297 to finish with an 889. Senior Emily Goldenstein improved her standings one spot in the final round, finishing in a tie for third following a final round 71. Her 212 had her just four strokes behind individual medalist Jillian Hollis of Georgia.
Goldenstein carded three birdies on her final round, with her third birdie on 15 pushing her to -2 on the day. There, she would finish, posting her first career back-to-back top five finishes. Goldenstein had posted back-to-back top 10 finishes in her freshman season with a finish for seventh at the FIU Pat Bradley Invitational and a tie for eighth at the South Alabama Invitational.
Madison Thomas added her third top 10 finish of the season with a final round 73 (+1). Sitting at +2 heading to her 16th hole, she birdied three to get back to +1, and there she would finish for the day. Her 217 would tie her for 10th overall with Purdue's Inez Wanamarta, the 80th ranked player in the country.
Sydney Colwill carded a day three 75 to finish in a tie for 42nd overall. Michaela Fletcher rounded out the day three scores for the team with a 79. Her 234 tied her for 62nd overall. Freshman Julia Matzat finished her third round tied for 80th overall following a third round 78, her lowest round of the three-day event.
Georgia rode its opening round 281 to the tournament title. A day three 291 gave the Bulldogs a nine stroke win over second place Purdue and Augusta. Central Arkansas finished fourth with an 879, followed by Memphis' 889.
Georgia's Jillian Hollis grabbed individual medalist honors with a 208 (-8), followed by UCA's Fernanda Lira (211).
Memphis will have two more weeks before stepping back onto the course in completion. The Lady Tigers will finish their regular season with a two-day event at the Charleston Invitational in South Carolina, Apr. 2-3. The team will then compete at the American Athletic Conference Championships, Apr. 15-17.
