Tigers snap four-game losing streak
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Kyle Ouellette lined a walk-off two-run single in the bottom of the ninth to give Memphis a 3-2 win over Southeast Missouri State Tuesday at FedExPark. The Tigers (3-5) snapped a four-game losing streak with the walk-off win.
Oullette finished the game 2-for-4 and had the only multiple-hit game for the Tigers. The junior college transfer is batting .321 on the season and leads the Tigers with five RBI.
Memphis starting pitcher Danny Denz tossed six shutout innings, allowing just three hits and striking out four batters. Denz was able to get two groundball double plays in the game.
Denz and SEMO starting pitcher Ashton Holyfield went blow-for-blow until the seventh inning, when Memphis finally broke the deadlock.
First baseman Nick Vaage walked to start the seventh inning and moved to second when Colton Neel singled. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch and a second wild pitch allowed Vaage to score the first run of the game.
The lead was short-lived though as Southeast Missouri came right back and snagged the lead in the top of the eighth. With the bases loaded and two outs, the Redhawks leading hitter Trevor Ezell lined a two-run single to grab the lead.
The Tigers batted back in the bottom of the ninth though, as Alec Trela started the inning with single, Vaage walked again and Neel walked to set it up for Ouellette's heroics.
Hunter Smith pitched 1 2/3 innings out of the bullpen and struck out three batters. Blake Bennett ended the game with 1 1/3 innings and earned his first win of the season.
Memphis will hit the road for its first weekend trip of the season to the Tri-Star Classic, now to be played at Tennessee's Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
