Hunter Smith pitches six scoreless in relief
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Hunter Smith came out of the bullpen and pitched six scoreless innings to lead Memphis to a 6-4 win over Middle Tennessee Friday night in the Tri-Star Classic.
The Tigers (4-5) will play Tennessee (6-4) Saturday at 11 a.m. (CT) on the second day of the tournament.
Smith dominated the Blue Raiders, striking out six batters and allowing just two hits. In the six scoreless innings, Smith allowed just three total base runners. He picked up his first win of the season and the fourth of his career.
The opening few innings were back and forth before Memphis took hold of the game, led by Smith on the mound.
Cale Hennemann, Alec Trela and Tyler Webb all had two hits apiece at the top of the Memphis batting order. Jason Santana had a nice day at the plate, going 1-for-2 with a double and three runs scored.
Trela blasted his first home run of the season to center field in the top of the first to give Memphis a 1-0 lead.
The game took a turn in the third inning, with both teams playing some shaky defense. The Tigers extended the lead out to 3-0 in the top half. Hennemann singled and then Trela launched a ball that was dropped at the wall to put two runners on base.
Webb singled to center to drive in Hennemann and then Trela was able to scamper home on a failed pickoff attempt to make it 3-0.
Middle Tennessee came right back in the bottom half to take a 4-3 lead, taking advantage of two Memphis errors.
Memphis knotted it back up though in the next half inning on an RBI single by Hennemann to score Jason Santana.
The game remained 4-4 until the Tigers retook the lead in the sixth after back-to-back hit batters to start the inning. Hennemann sacrificed the runners into scoring position, before Trela singled to give the Tigers a 5-4 lead.
Memphis tacked on an insurance run in the eighth after Santana started the inning with a double and scored on a wild pitch.
