Softball Falls To No. 15 UL Lafayette In Extras

Memphis finishes Louisiana Classics with 3-1 record
LAFAYETTE, La. – The University of Memphis softball team dropped a heartbreaker Sunday afternoon to No. 15 UL Lafayette by a score of 6-3 in 11 innings. It was the first extra inning game for the Tigers this season as they fall to 7-5 on the year.

"I'm proud of the team this weekend," said head coach Natalie Poole. "We showed up ready to win today and fought until the end. I am proud of Molly's game on the mound and throughout the entire weekend. We saw some players get better as they weekend went on."

UL Lafayette struck first in the top of the second inning, but the Tigers promptly answered with two during their next plate appearance on an RBI single to left by Tyler Johnson.

Memphis added one more in the fourth before the Ragin' Cajuns came back to tie up the contest in the sixth. It took five more innings to settle the game when UL Lafayette put up three in the 11th. Molly Smith pitched in 10.2 of the 11 innings and struck out two in her second loss of the season.

"We are looking forward to getting home for the next three weeks and are excited to put to an even better team on the field for our crowd," added Poole.

Memphis is through with the road tournaments and will begin play at the Tigers Softball Complex this weekend for the Blues City Classic. The Tigers are hosting Bradley, Fort Wayne, UL Monroe, and UMKC and will play in four games beginning Friday. - Top 2 – With two outs, a single to left field combined with a double to center resulted in the first run of the game. Memphis was charged with a throwing error on the play. (1 run, 3 hits, 1 error, 1 left on base)
- Bottom 2 – Delaney Smith led the inning off with an infield single and advanced to second on a stolen base. She and Addison Maxwell scored on Tyler Johnson's two RBI single to left center. (2 runs, 3 hits, 0 errors, 2 left on base)
- Bottom 4 – Memphis extended its lead to 3-1 with a fielder's choice play by Baylee Smith with the bases loaded. Johnson reached initially on a throwing error while Jessie Lamb walked and Kyler Trosclair Klatt singled. (1 run, 1 hit, 1 error, 2 left on base)
- Top 6 – UL Lafayette scored the first run of the inning by leading off with back-to-back doubles and a single up the middle. A fielder's choice play two batters later scored the second run of the inning. (2 runs, 4 hits, 0 errors, 3 left on base)
- Top 11 – The Ragin' Cajuns put up three in the 11th on four hits, capped with a double to left center. The final two runs of the inning were unearned as the Tigers were charged with another error. (3 runs, 4 hits, 1 error, 1 left on base)
