Softball Heads To Louisiana For The 32nd Annual Louisiana Classic

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis softball team heads down to Lafayette, La., to wrap up the last road tournament of the season before hosting three tournaments at home. The Tigers will face four teams during the 32^nd Annual Louisiana Classic, UMBC, North Florida, Southeastern Louisiana, and UL Lafayette.

Quick Hitters

Through two road tournaments, Memphis currently sits at 4-4 this season.
Senior shortstop Kyler Trosclair Klatt leads the Tigers with 10 hits, including four triples on the year.
Molly Smith leads the pitching corps for Memphis. In five appearances, she has an ERA of 0.58 with 33 strikeouts.
The Tigers are off to the races again, with 15 steals this season. Memphis opponents have combined to steal only four in the early stages of the year.
The freshman class is already making an impact for the Tigers. Pitcher Mariah Nichols has an ERA of 1.11 with 10 strikeouts in four appearances, while freshman bats have produced 10 combined hits.
Senior Brooke Lee smashed two home runs against Steven F. Austin, her first homers since the 2016 season.
Following the Louisiana Classic, the Tigers will host three tournaments at home through the first few weekends of March.

About the Competition

After going 23-27 last season, the Retrievers of UMBC have started 1-4 in head coach Heather Gelbard's second season at the helm.
Four Retrievers have hit extra base hits, including three doubles, two triples, and one home run hit by freshman Sierra Pierce.
North Florida junior Navia Penrod is hitting .500 through 11 games, collecting 18 hits in 36 at bats.
The Osprey like to get the runners going, having already successfully swiped 16 bases.
Southeastern Louisiana has started the season 7-1, with every game being played at its home field.
After finishing second in the nation in steals per game at 2.95, the Lions are back to the races with 32 swipes through eight games.
With a 7-2 overall record, UL Lafayette is ranked No. 15 in the USA Today/NFCA DI Top 25 Coaches Poll.
The Ragin' Cajuns Alissa Dalton and Kara Gremillion lead the team with 15 and 11 hits, respectively, through nine contests.
UL Lafayette's pitching has held opponents to just a .204 batting average, and the pitching staff have a combined 69 strikeouts on the year.

Final Details
First pitch against UMBC on Friday afternoon is set for 2:00 p.m. CT at Lamson Park in Lafayette, La. The Tigers will compete twice on Saturday, against North Florida and Southeastern Louisiana, and finish up the weekend with a Sunday morning game against UL Lafayette.
