Memphis, Tulane meet for the second time this season
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – As it prepares for Saturday's American Athletic Conference game at Tulane, the University of Memphis is facing several attainable goals.
Â
A victory in New Orleans would move the Tigers (15-11, 6-7 American) closer to the top half of the 12-team conference standings; improve the team's league record to .500 and give the U of M back-to-back conference road victories for the first time since 2014-15.
Tip-off is 2 p.m. at Fogelman Arena and ESPNU will carry the game.
Â
The Tigers are coming off a 70-67 road win at SMU, a game in which they outlasted an injury-depleted Mustangs' team with a glaring absence of their own: Memphis played without junior guard Jeremiah Martin, the league's scoring leader at 19.2 points a game.
Â
Martin missed the first game of his career with a right hip injury he sustained late in the second half of the team's Feb. 11 home loss to UCF. Martin, however, returned to practice after the SMU game and is expected to start at Tulane.
Â
Without Martin, the Tigers turned the point guard duties to reserve Kareem Brewton and he responded with 16 points, six assists and five rebounds in a season-high 39 minutes.
Â
The Tigers were particularly effective sharing the basketball in the victory with 20 assists on 26 made baskets, the highest percentage of assists to field goals this season. As a result, the Tigers shot 76.2 percent in the second half and had 12 assists on their 16 field goals.
Â
Five Tigers finished in double figures at SMU. Mike Parks Jr. led with 17 points followed by Brewton (16), Kyvon Davenport (13), Raynere Thornton (12) and Jamal Johnson (10). Thornton barely missed a double-double finishing with nine rebounds.
Â
Tulane (13-12, 4-9 American) has lost four straight and six of seven. The Green Wave's lone win during the seven-game stretch was a 71-69 victory at East Carolina. Earlier this season, the Tigers defeated Tulane, 96-89, at FedExForum.
