Gauthier named league's Defensive Player of the Year
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Senior Olivia Gauthier was named the American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year as a program-record seven student-athletes earned AAC all-conference recognition, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.
In addition to Gauthier, junior Serena Dolan, sophomore Clarissa Larisey and senior Marie Levasseur were named First Team All-Conference. Senior Catherine Levasseur and sophomore Elizabeth Moberg earned Second Team All-Conference honors, while freshman Tanya Boychuk was named to the league's All-Rookie Team.
The Tigers' four First Team All-Conference selections also set a program record. Memphis has garnered First Team and Rookie Team accolades each season as a member of The American. The Tigers' seven total individual award winners led The American, while the Tigers' four First Team honorees were the most of any American team.
"I say this time and time again, but none of these kids could get these awards without the help of their teammates," head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "Every one of these kids are well deserving, and I think there are some kids that aren't on that list that could absolutely be on that list. Hopefully this gives them that much more confidence going into this conference tournament. It's always nice to have a lot of your kids picked for the all-conference recognitions."
Gauthier, who was named the 2018 Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, landed her fourth and fifth postseason league accolades. The Saint John, New Brunswick native was also voted Second Team All-Conference in 2016 and 2017, while making an appearance on the All-Rookie Team in 2015. Gauthier tallied five assists for the Tigers this season and anchored a backline that pitched 11 shutouts. Gauthier became the first Memphis player to be named a conference Defensive Player of the Year since former Tiger and current assistant coach Lizzy Simonin earned the honor in 2011 in Conference USA.
Dolan earned First Team accolades after netting two goals and dishing out three assists, while serving as a staple in the Memphis midfield. The Kentville, Nova Scotia native started every match for the Tigers, logging 1320 minutes and was a threat on corner kicks. Dolan's First Team nod is the second postseason accolade of her career after also earning a spot on the AAC All-Rookie team in 2016.
A unanimous selection, Larisey tallied 10 goals and four points, leading the Tigers with 24 points this season. The Ottawa, Ontario product started all 18 matches for Memphis and was named the AAC Offensive Player of the Week on three occasions throughout the season. Larisey was also listed to the 2017 All-Rookie Team in her freshman campaign.
Marie Levasseur capped her illustrious career with her fifth AAC postseason honor. A 2018 Preseason All-Conference selection, Levasseur registered five goals and seven assists in 2018 to rank third on the team in points with 17. The Stoneham, Quebec native was also named First Team All-Conference in 2016 and 2017, and earned Rookie of the Year in 2015 to go along with a spot on the All-Rookie Team.
Catherine Levasseur earned her first postseason accolade Tuesday, after serving as a mainstay in the Tiger midfield and back line throughout her career. Levasseur earned a captain role halfway through 2017, playing multiple roles on the pitch. The Stoneham, Quebec native tallied four goals and six assists in four seasons and started all but one match in her career.
Moberg collected her second career league honor after being named to the 2017 All-Rookie Team. In 2018, Moberg recorded 11 shutouts, which tied a school record for single-season shutouts by a sophomore. The Port St. Lucie, Fla., native was named the league's Goalkeeper of the Week three times and earned a spot on the Weekly Honor once.
Boychuk enjoyed a stellar rookie campaign, leading her class with three goals and netted the game-winning goal at Houston. The newcomer played in all 18 regular-season matches and drew four starts. The Edmonton, Alberta product was named the league's Rookie of the Week on Oct. 8.
Memphis returns to the pitch for the American Athletic Conference tournament this week. After earning a first-round bye, Memphis will begin play on Friday at 3:30 p.m. (CT) and will face the winner of UCF vs. Temple.
