Memphis playing in its fourth event of the fall
VERO BEACH, Fla. – The University of Memphis men's golf team is in Vero Beach, Fla., to participate in its fourth event of the fall season: The Quail Valley Intercollegiate at Quail Valley Golf Club.
Â
The tournament will be held Sunday through Tuesday on a course designed by Tommy Fazio and Nick Price. Par is 72 on the 7,350-yard layout.
Â
The Tigers finished 12th at The Intercollegiate at The Grove last weekend in College Grove, Tenn. Their best finish of the fall came in their opening tournament: the Memphis Intercollegiate at Colonial Country Club, where the Tigers were runner-up to Chattanooga.
Â
Memphis has been led this fall by the duo of Bradley Bawden and Chase Harris. Bawden has two Top 15 finishes, including a fourth-place showing at the Memphis Intercollegiate, where he shot 6-under 210. Harris, who shot a career-best 66 at the Memphis Intercollegiate, has one Top 10 and one Top 15 finish. Isaiah Jackson also has a Top 10, finishing sixth at the Memphis Intercollegiate. Bawden, Harris and Jackson will compete, along with Rodi Vlasveld and Jordan Even.
Tigers coach Blake Smart would like to see his team recover from a disappointing performance at The Intercollegiate at The Grove. Memphis shot 22-over-par in the final round.
"It's a new week and we have to put our performance at The Grove behind us," he said. "We had some good success here (at Vero Beach) in the past and I think it's an important week for us to build some momentum."
Â
The Tigers are appearing in the Quail Valley Tournament for the fourth-straight season. Memphis finished fifth in 2015 and in a tie for 9th last year.
Â
The event will feature 15 schools. In addition to Memphis, one other American Athletic Conference program will participate: USF. The Bulls also played in last weekend's event in College Grove, Tenn., and finished second at 12-under 852.
