SHOAL CREEK, Ala. - The Memphis Tigers finished its appearance at the 2017 Shoal Creek Intercollegiate with a ninth-place finish after an eight-over 296 in the tournament's final round, ending the three rounds 14 strokes over par.
Wake Forest won the event with an 849, while Liberty (862), North Florida (863), Ole Miss (864), and Georgia Southern (865) rounded out the top five teams in the field. The Tigers finished three strokes behind Kennesaw State (875), eight behind UAB (870) and nine behind Notre Dame (869) in the team standings.
Leading the way for the Tigers was Rodi Vlasveld who carded a one-under 71 on the day, ending the tournament at +1 and tied for 16th overall. Vlasveld, who started the round on the 10th hole of the 7,306-yard par-72 course, had a double bogey on his first hole, the 430-yard par-four opener to the back nine. He birdied the par-four fourth hole, but added another double-bogey on the 17th hole, pushing him to three strokes over par.
On his back nine of the day he caught fire, and had four birdies over the final nine holes including on the second, third, sixth, and eighth. That flurry, coupled with five pars on the remaining holes dropped his individual aggregate score from three over to one stroke under par for the day.
Borja Martin and Brad Bawden each shot a one-over 73 in the final day, Bawden finishing at +1 for the tournament - tied for 16th - and Martin at +3 over the three rounds - tied for 23rd.
Martin fluctuated between even par and a shot over par all round on Tuesday, as he opened with a bogey on his first hole, and answered immediately with a birdie. Five consecutive pars kept him at even par before he bogeyed his eighth hole of the day.Â
Three more pars for the freshman followed, before he closed his final seven holes with two birdies, two bogeys, and three pars.
Bawden had a tumultuous final round, as he opened play with a double bogey on the opening hole; however, followed with an eagle on the 525-yard par-five 11th hole to reclaim his even status. He had a bogey and a birdie in his next two holes, before another bogey pushed him to a stroke over par.
His first par of the round came on his sixth hole, and he added a bogey on the 16th hole to push him back to two strokes over par. Three consecutive pars followed, leading up to a two-hole stretch where he birdied the second hole and recorded his second eagle of the round on the third hole to drop his score to one under par. He closed with four pars and two bogeys over his final six holes to end the day at one stroke over par.
Chase Harris finished with a 79 on the tournament's final day with two birdies, six bogeys and a triple bogey, which were coupled with nine pars to finish the round at +7, and the tournament at +17 (tied for 65th).
Jordan Even struggled in his final round with nine pars and nine holes over par, closing the day at +12, and +14 for the tournament which put him tied for 61st in the field.
