Tigers collect just two runs on six hits
STORRS, Conn. – Memphis had a 2-1 lead but a big fifth-inning for UConn gave the Huskies a 6-2 win in the series opener at J.O. Christian Field Friday. The Tigers (20-10, 2-2 AAC) will try to even the series with the Huskies (17-10, 4-0 AAC) Saturday at noon (CT).
The Husky fifth inning started when they loaded the bases with nobody out off of starting pitcher Alex Hicks. Memphis turned to Takoda Metoxen out of the bullpen and the tying-run immediately crossed the plate on a balk before the first pitch was even thrown.
Metoxen rebounded from the balk and was nearly out of the jam, but a two-out two-run single gave UConn the lead 4-2. The Tigers turned to Hunter Smith to get out of the inning.
UConn expanded the lead with a two-run homer off of Smith in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the score 6-2.
Memphis jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead after Tyler Webb started the game with a line-drive double to left field. Webb advanced to third on a groundout by Brandon Grudzielanek and then Chris Carrier drove in the opening run with an RBI fielder's choice groundout.
UConn tied the game up in the third after a one-out triple was driven in by an RBI groundout. The Tigers were fortunate to not be trailing after Jason Santana threw out a runner stealing before the Huskie's triple.
Memphis got out of a big jam in the fourth after UConn got a pair of runners in scoring position with one out. Hicks was able to get a groundball to Grudzielanek who threw out the lead runner at home for the second out. After a walk loaded the bases, Hicks got a pop up to end the inning.
The Tigers got the lead back in the fifth after Trent Turner doubled to drive in Jason Santana, who had singled to lead off the inning. It could have been a bigger inning as Turner made it to third with one out but nobody could get him in.
Smith went on to pitch the final 3 1/3 innings and struck out two batters. Offensively, the Tigers' six hits were all by different players.
