Tigers drop first series since opening weekend
STORRS, Conn. – Memphis committed four errors and allowed six unearned runs as the Tigers lost 10-7 at UConn and dropped the series to the Huskies Saturday at J.O. Christian Field. The Tigers (20-11, 2-3 AAC) will try to salvage the series against the Huskies (18-10, 5-0 AAC) Sunday at 10 a.m. (CT).
Memphis and UConn combined for nine total runs in the first inning and it was the Huskies that were on top, leading 5-4.
The Tigers plated four runs on four hits and one UConn error. The Huskies answered right back with five runs on four hits and two Tiger errors. Memphis starter Drew Crosby was tagged for five runs in the first but only two were earned.
The Tigers came right back in the second inning with two runs to retake the lead. Memphis did the damage with two outs after Tyler Webb singled and Brandon Grudzielanek walked to start the rally.
Andy Bowman and Alec Trela then lined back-to-back singles to drive in Webb and Grudzielanek and retake the lead 6-5.
Memphis added a run to its lead with a run in the third inning. Jason Santana drove in Trent Turner with a sacrifice fly to make the lead 7-5.
The Tigers offense was held hitless by the UConn bullpen from that point forward. Memphis had just two base runners, on a walk and an error, from the third through ninth innings.
