Jonathan Bowlan and Danny Denz combine for shutout
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Coming off of the heels of a series win at Cincinnati, Memphis shutout Belmont 6-0 Monday at E.S. Rose Park. The Tigers (19-9), playing in their fourth game in four days, didn't show any signs of fatigue in hammering the Bruins as they outhit them 12-6.
Memphis starter Jonathan Bowlan carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and allowed just one hit through six scoreless innings. He struck out six batters and improved to 3-3 win the win.
Freshman Danny Denz pitched the final three innings to record his first career save. The Bruins got five hits off of Denz but couldn't scratch out a run.
Third baseman Zach Schritenthal had his best day at the plate this season, going 4-for-5 with a double and a run scored. Schritenthal and Neel were the only Tigers with multiple hits in the game. Eight of the nine Tiger starters had a hit.
Memphis got on the board in the third inning after the reigning American Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week Chris Carrier drove in Tyler Webb with a sacrifice fly.
Bruins starter Casey Queener gave the Tigers fits through five innings. The sophomore struck out nine batters and allowed only one unearned run.
Belmont made a pitching change to start the sixth inning and the Tigers took advantage, putting together a big four-run inning to blow the game open.
The inning started with back-to-back doubles by Carrier and Andy Bowman to get the first run across the board. Trent Turner put down a sacrifice bunt but reached on an error that allowed Bowman to scamper home.
A single by Zach Schritenthal put runners on the corners and sent Belmont back to the bullpen with nobody out.
Jason Santana squeezed in a run with a sacrifice bunt and Colton Neel followed with an RBI single to make the lead 5-0.
Danny Denz came out of the bullpen in the seventh inning and quickly retired the first two batters before the game went into a short rain delay. The freshman lefthander struggled after the delay, loading the bases with two walks and a single but got a fly out to end the inning.
The Tigers added an insurance run on a Brandon Grudzielanek sacrifice fly to drive in Colton Neel.
Memphis was outstanding defensively, turning three double plays and playing errorless defense.
Memphis will be back at home Wednesday to host Alcorn State at 6:30 p.m. at FedExPark. The Tigers will turn right back around and hit the road for UConn for a three-game weekend series.
