Apr 29, 2017 | Baseball
Memphis scored nine runs in the third on six hits and two errors
Connor Alexander recorded the win after pitching 4 2/3 innings of relief. He allowed just three hits and one unearned run. The junior right-hander was called on to get out of a tight spot in the third inning and was solid throughout.
Memphis blew the game wide open with a nine-run third inning on six hits and two errors. Almost all of the damage was done with just one out in the frame.
Brandon Grudzielanek started things with a double off the wall in center field and Chris Carrier singled to put runners on the corners with one out. The first run came home on a wild pitch to bring home Grudzielanek for a 1-0 lead.
Alec Trela blasted his sixth home run of the season to expand the lead to 3-0. Andy Bowman worked a walked and Trent Turner legged out a bunt single to put two more runners on base.
Zach Schritenthal continued the hit parade with an RBI single to right field to drive in Bowman. Jason Santana laid down a bunt to drive in Turner and an errant throw put both runners in scoring position.
With five runs in and just one out in the inning, UCF went to the bullpen but things didn't get any better for the Knights.
Carlos Williams lined a ball that the Knights' right fielder whiffed on to drive in another run. Tyler Webb then walked to load the bases before Grudzielanek doubled for the second time in the inning. The final blow was a sacrifice fly by Carrier to make the score 9-0.
Grudzielanek finished the game 3-for-5 with three doubles and two RBI. Carrier and Turner each had two hits in the game.
UCF was able to answer back with three runs on five straight singles to start the bottom of the third. Connor Alexander was called on out of the bullpen with two runners on and nobody out and he was able to get a double play to end the threat.
The Knights got another run back in the seventh after a two-out error that was followed by an RBI single
Taylor Bobo pitched a scoreless 1 1/3 innings and didn't allow a hit. Colton Hathcock pitched the final inning and didn't allow a run, while striking out two batters.
