Jonathan Bowlan pitched seven innings and allowed just two runs
ORLANDO, Fla. – Jonathan Bowlan allowed just two runs on six hits in seven innings but he was handed a tough-luck loss as UCF came out on top 2-1 Sunday at UCF Baseball Complex. The Tigers dropped the series and fell to 24-21 and 5-10 in American Athletic Conference play.
Memphis managed just three hits offensively and scored the one run on a solo home run by Chris Carrier. Despite only having three hits, the Tigers had some opportunities but finished with six runners left on base.
The Tigers were hitless through the first three innings, while UCF got on the board in the bottom of the third after a leadoff double came around to score on an RBI groundout. Bowlan was able to limit the damage to just one run in the inning.
Carrier quickly answered with the Tigers' firs hit of the game, a two-out solo blast to left field to tie the game 1-1 in the top of the fourth.
UCF regained the lead in the fifth after a leadoff single came around to score. Bowlan was nearly able to navigate the leadoff hit but a two-out RBI single drove in the go-ahead run.
Memphis tried to rally back in the sixth after Brandon Grudzielanek singled with two outs and Carrier walked but the Tigers couldn't knot the game back up.
The Tigers had another great opportunity to score in the seventh after Trent Turner singled to start the inning and was sacrificed to second by Zach Schritenthal. UCF went to the bullpen and reliever Jason Bahr struck out the two Tigers he faced to end the inning.
Memphis had runners on base again in the eighth and ninth but couldn't get the big hit.
Colton Hathcock pitched a scoreless eighth inning to keep the game 2-1 going to the ninth inning. The junior pitched scoreless innings on back-to-back days.
