Men's Golf Heads Into Final Round in Sixth Place at Conference Championships
Apr 24, 2017 | Men's Golf
INNISBROOK, Fla. - With 18 holes to play in the 2017 American Athletic Conference Championship, the Memphis Tigers stand in sixth place in the field following a second round 300 on the Innisbrook Resort Copperhead Course.
Memphis' second round 300 gives them a two-round total of 594, seven strokes behind UConn for fifth place overall and nine strokes behind Houston for fourth. Memphis remains ahead of SMU (595), Temple (598), and East Carolina (602). USF leads the field through 36 holes with a two-over 570.
The Tigers kick off their final go around on the course starting at 7 a.m. central time tomorrow morning when Kevin Lee tees off on the first hole of the course, and is followed by Colin Dubnik (7:10 a.m.), Sydney Chung (7:20 a.m.), JC Campbell (7:30 a.m.), and Nick Giles (7:40 a.m.)
Leading the way for the Tigers was JC Campbell on the 7,125-yard, par-71 course, who shot a one-over 72 on the day with a birdie, two bogeys and 15 pars. Over his last 30 holes of the tournament Campbell is two strokes over par, and his +6 for the tournament has him tied for 18th in the field.
Freshman Nick Giles continues to be the overall leader for the Tigers, and is four strokes over par through 36 holes after carding a 74 in the morning. Sydney Chung and Colin Dubnik are each eight strokes over par for the tournament, and have been in Memphis' scoring four for both rounds, each with matching 77's in the middle rounds of the tournament, and are tied for 24th. Kevin Lee's 81 on the day dropped him to 45th for the tournament, and is 16 strokes over par over the two rounds.
Campbell was the model of consistency through the second round, as he opened with four consecutive pars before recording his round's only birdie on the 570-yard par-five fifth hole. A birdie two holes later evened his score back to even par, as the sophomore shot an even-par 36 at the turn. His first seven holes of his back nine were also pars, before a bogey on the 430-yard par-four 16th hole was his third and final non-par score of the round, as he closed with back-to-back pars to finish at 72.
Giles had a rough start to his day, with back-to-back bogeys to kick off the round; however, he quickly righted the ship with six consecutive pars until he bogeyed his final hole heading into the turn, sending him to three strokes over par through nine holes. The freshman kept his wits about him, and rebounded with two birdies and four pars over his first six holes of the back nine, dropping his score to one stroke over par. A slight stumble down the stretch with two bogeys in his final three holes would not drop Giles out of the top-15 on the individual standings for the tournament, as he ended the day with a three-over 74.
Chung, Memphis' only senior playing in the tournament, opened his round with back-to-back pars, before recording a bogey in three of his next four holes, pushing him to three strokes over par. He closed the front nine strong with two pars and a birdie, and was two strokes over par at the turn. His aggregate score doubled on the 11th hole with a double-bogey, and his next two holes were a bogey and birdie to keep him at four strokes over par. Three pars and two bogeys over his final six holes sent him into the clubhouse with a six-over 77, and an eight-over 150 for the two rounds.
Dubnik, one of two freshman playing for the Tigers, also had a rough start, as he had four bogeys and five pars over his first nine holes, and went into the turn at four strokes over par. His next seven holes saw three pars, two bogeys and two birdies, as he remained at four strokes over par; however, finished with back-to-back bogeys to head into the clubhouse at six strokes over par with the 77, and 150 for the two rounds.
Lee was evenly paced through the round, and finished five strokes over par on both sides of the course, as he opened the day with a double-bogey before recording pars on five of the next eight holes. On the back nine he saw four pars and five bogeys to card an 81, and a 158 through 36 holes.
