Lady Tigers to face Cincinnati in quarterfinal round.
MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis women's tennis team (11-7) earned a top five seed and will receive a first round bye at the American Athletic Conference Championship tournament that begins Wednesday. With the opening round bye, number five seeded Memphis will open play on Thursday, re-matching with number four seeded Cincinnati, the last team the Lady Tigers played in the regular season, at 11 a.m. (CT).
Cincinnati won the last meeting between the two teams in Cincinnati 4-1. Memphis, who was playing back-to-back road matches, had just picked up a win at Xavier, 4-2, the day before. The Lady Tigers took the doubles point with wins at two and three, but dropped matches at four singles courts to close their regular season.
This is the third straight season the Lady Tigers will have advanced to the quarterfinal round of the American Athletic Conference Championships under third-year coach Hayden Perez. Last year, Memphis upset number six-seeded East Carolina, 4-1, in the first round, and was edged by number three-seeded SMU, 4-3, in the quarters.
