Tyler Johnson Hits Fourth Home Run of Season in Loss
HOUSTON – Houston jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning, and never trailed in the game, as the Cougars and Tigers pulled into a three-way tie with Tulsa with a 7-9 mark in Conference play for the third seed in the upcoming American Athletic Conference Tournament.
Kyler Trosclair had two hits in three at-bats for the Tigers, while five others: Hannah Harrell, Lindsey Stickrod, Tyler Johnson, Brooke Lee, and Jessie Lamb, each had one hit in three at-bats. Johnson scored the team's only run and had the team's sole RBI on a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning.
Christian Novak, the defending American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week picked up the loss, going six innings, allowing three earned runs while striking out four and waking none.
Stickrod, the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the past week got the first hit of the game for Memphis (26-28, 7-9 American), a two-out single in the top of the first inning; however, she was left stranded.
Houston (24-28, 7-9 American) squeezed three runs across in the bottom half of the first inning, two coming after a two-out error in the frame, as the Cougars jumped ahead 3-0.
A one-out solo home run for the Cougars in the bottom of the third inning pushed the hosts' lead to 4-0.
The next eight Tiger batters were retired in order, until Johnson stepped to the plate with two outs in the fourth inning, and took an 0-2 pitch over the wall in left field, her second home run in a series opener in as many weeks. Lee followed with a single in the inning; however, was left stranded at first base.
Houston answered with an unearned insurance run after a fielding error. An insurance run in the sixth inning gave the game its 6-1 final score, despite Memphis putting a runner on second base in both the sixth and seventh innings.
Houston was led by Katie St. Pierre, who was 3-for-3 at the plate, while Rachel Hill and Maya Thomas were each 2-for-3.
Savannah Heebner struck out three over seven innings of work, improving her record to 8-7 on the year.
The teams meet back on the diamond on Saturday with a 2 p.m. first pitch.
