Brooke Lee drives in Hannah Harrell in 6th for team’s lone run
HOUSTON – A sacrifice fly off the bat of Brooke Lee pushed Memphis into a 1-1 tie; however, the Cougars scored once in the bottom of the sixth, and held on for a 2-1 American Athletic Conference win.
Kyler Trosclair went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Tigers, and climbed into the team lead in batting average this season at .309. Lindsey Stickrod, Lee, and Regan Hadley each went 1-for-2, while Jessie Lamb was 1-for-3. Hannah Harrell scored the team's only run, while Lee had the team's RBI.
Molly Smith fell to 11-14 on the season, striking out two in six innings of work, while giving up six hits and two runs.
Memphis (26-29, 7-10 American) saw its first six batters retired in order, before getting its first hit of the game off the bat of Trosclair, who then stole second base for her 23rd stolen base of the season.
Houston (25-28, 8-9 American) struck first in the bottom of the third inning with a double steal of second and home, pushing the host Cougars ahead 1-0.
The Tigers put runners on first and second in the fourth inning with a walk to Lindsey Stickrod and a single from Lee; however, neither could come around to score.
Trosclair singled again in the fifth inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Regan Hadley, but back-to-back groundouts ended the threat.
Harrell opened the sixth inning with a walk, before Stickrod singled to first base, pushing Harrell to second. A Tyler Johnson sacrifice bunt moved the runners ahead a base, before Lee flew out to right field, allowing Harrell to score the eventual game-tying score.
Houston answered back quickly in the bottom of the sixth inning with a one-out RBI single, and had runners on first and third with one out, but a foul-out and a runner-left-early call kept the Cougars with one run in the inning.
Hadley and Lamb hit back-to-back one-out singles in the top of the seventh inning; however, a fielder's choice and a groundout ended the threat, and securing the Houston win.
Houston had six hits in the game, one each from six different batters. Presley Bell picked up the win, improving to 6-8 on the year, as she struck out one and walked two.
The teams meet tomorrow at noon for the third and final game of the series, and final regular-season game of the season for each squad.
