May 03, 2016 | Women's Track and Field
Senior's pole vault mark is seventh-best in the nation.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Memphis' Carolina Carmichael has been named the American Athletic Conference Female Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
It is Carmichael's second career outdoor field athlete of the week honor and the senior's fifth overall weekly league accolade (three indoor; two outdoor). During the 2015-16 indoor campaign, she was twice honored as the conference's female field athlete of the week.
Last weekend, Carmichael won the women's pole vault at the Memphis Tiger Invitational, the program's only home meet of the 2016 outdoor season. She won the event with a season-best 14-6.75 (4.44m) vault, which was just 2.25 inches shy of her own school record (14-9; 4.50m).
The Lake Forest, Ill., native has competed in five meets this outdoor season, posting two-top finishes four times. She won pole vault titles at the Mar. 26 Vanderbilt Black & Gold and Apr. 30 Memphis Tiger invitationals.
Her 14-6.75 mark (4.44m) is seventh nationally and also is tops in the American Athletic Conference by over seven inches. Carmichael is the league's two-time defending outdoor champion in the women's pole vault, winning gold at the 2014 and 2015 conference meets.
The Tigers are off from competition this week for final exams and the University's May 7 commencement. Memphis returns to action May 12-15 at the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships in Orlando, Fla.Â
