Matt Ferguson allowed one run in first career complete game
NEW ORLEANS, La. – Memphis scored five runs in the second inning and Matt Ferguson tossed his first career complete game as Memphis blasted No. 15 Tulane 8-1 to even the series Saturday at Turchin Stadium.
Ferguson was following up a career-long eight inning start against Houston last week in which he allowed just two runs to get a no decision. The senior was even more outstanding Saturday against the first place Green Wave. He allowed just one run on four hits through nine innings to record his fifth win of the season.
Memphis (17-34, 8-12 American) exploded for five runs on five hits in the top of the second inning to jump out to a big lead over the Green Wave and the Tigers cruised from there.
Jake Overbey provided the big blow when he crushed a bases-clearing double into the gap in left-center field. The three-run double was just his third extra-base hit of the season.
Jacob Elliott had a great day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and a sacrifice bunt to help the Tigers put up the big second inning. Brandon Grudzielanek was 2-for-5 with two runs scored.
The Tigers started the second inning with back-to-back singles from Grudzielanek and Trent Turner before they were advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Elliott.
The first run of the game came home on a fielding error by Tulane shortstop Stephen Alemais. An infield single by Jason Santana loaded the bases with just one out before Overbey's double. Zach Schritenthal added to the lead with a two-out RBI single to score Overbey and complete the five-run inning.
Jake Little started the third inning with a double to end Tulane starter Ross Massey's day on the mound. The Green Wave turned to Tim Yandel out of the bullpen but the Tigers were still able to drive in Little with an RBI single by Elliott to make the Memphis lead 6-0.
The Tigers tacked on another run in the fourth inning and in the process forced another move to the bullpen for Tulane. This time the Green Wave called on Eric Steel, who entered with the bases loaded and managed to allow only one run to cross the plate to make the score 7-0.
Tulane broke up the shutout in the eighth inning on a pair of singles. Tubbs nearly threw out the runner at the plate to keep the shutout intact but the runner was called safe on a very close play.
Memphis will go for the series win over the Green Wave in the finale Sunday at 1 p.m.
