Memphis improves to 7-8 in AAC Play
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – In the final home game of the 2016 season, the Memphis Tigers picked up a 5-2 win over the Tulsa Golden Hurricane, which also gave the Tigers the series win.
With the series win, Memphis goes to a game ahead of the Golden Hurricane in the American Athletic Conference standings; with Tulsa needing to finish its last series against UConn two games better than the Tigers finish their final series against Houston.
Lindsey Stickrod was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate for the Tigers, as Lindsay Crowdus was 2-for-4. Five others: Hannah Harrell, Brooke Lee, Brittany Seale, Kyler Trosclair, and Regan Hadley each had a single hit. The teams' five runs came from five different players, with Trosclair knocking in two runs, while Seale had the eventual game-winning run a plate appearance earlier.
Memphis (26-27, 7-8 AAC) starting pitcher Christian Novak continued where she left off from the final game on Saturday, and kept the Golden Hurricane off of the board for each of the four innings that she had pitched.
The Tigers struck first in the game when Crowdus opened the bottom half of the first inning with a single, before stealing second base. A groundout to the pitcher moved Crowdus to third, before Stickrod hit a sharp single to left field to put the hosts ahead 1-0.
Tulsa (29-17, 6-9 AAC) wouldn't get its first runner onto second base until the fourth inning, when Shelby Estocado singled and stole second base.
In the fifth inning Memphis struck again, kicking off a stretch of three straight half-innings with a run, when Hadley singled to right field and advanced to second on a groundout. Crowdus singled to center field and advanced to second on the throw to the plate. Tulsa catcher Catherine Horner made an attempt to put out Crowdus at second; however, the throw skipped into center field. Hadley chased towards home plate and Crowdus towards third, as Hadley touched home plate a fraction of a second ahead of Crowdus being thrown out at third base for the third out in the inning.
After a stellar first inning for relief pitcher Molly Smith in the top of the fifth, the sophomore got into some trouble in the top of the sixth inning when Maggie Withee singled and advanced two bases on a double from Horner. Smith followed with a strikeout and a line-out to shortstop Trosclair; however, a single to left field scored Withee and Horner, tying the score at two runs apiece. The next batter reached on a walk, before the inning ended on a pop-up.
Tied for the first time since the top of the first inning, Memphis answered back in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Harrell hit an infield single to the pitcher. Stickrod laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to advance Harrell to second; however, the bunt was miss-played by Tulsa, putting runners on first and second base. Tyler Johnson followed with another sacrifice bunt, moving the runners to second and third, before Lee drew a walk to load the bases.
Seale took advantage of the bases-loaded situation and singled to center field, scoring Harrell for the eventual game-winning run. A batter later Trosclair hit a single through the right side of the infield, scoring Stickrod and pinch-runner Breana Valenzuela, and giving the Tigers their final runs of the game.
Smith retired the Golden Hurricane in order in the top of the seventh on a pop-up and two groundouts, securing the win for Memphis.
Smith picked up the win, improving to 11-13 on the season as she struck out three over her three innings of work, walking one and allowing the two runs on three hits. Christian Novak threw four scoreless innings where she struck out one, scattered two hits, and walked two.
Tulsa starting pitcher Caitlin Sill fell to 16-9 on the year as she gave up nine hits and five runs (three earned) over her five and a third inning of work, walking two and striking out none.
The Tigers next travel to Houston, Texas, to take on the Houston Cougars in the final AAC series of the season.
