Tigers Split with Tulsa in Key AAC Series
Apr 30, 2016 | Softball
Christian Novak tosses her second shutout of the season
The teams will play for the series win on Sunday, as the game time has been bumped up to 11 a.m. to help accommodate for weather and travel.
Jessie Lamb went 2-for-4 on the day with a walk and two runs scored. Lindsey Stickrod went 3-for-8 with two RBI's, while Kyler Trosclair and Tyler Johnson each scored twice – including Johnson's third home run of the 2016 season.
Tulsa (29-16, 6-8 AAC) never trailed in the opener, soring four times in the frame including a three-run home run from Shelby Estocado. The visitors added to their lead in the second inning on a sacrifice fly to right field.
Memphis (25-27, 6-8 AAC) answered with three runs in the bottom of the second, as the Tigers recorded three straight one-out hits from Trosclair, Regan Hadley, and Lamb. The first run came when Lindsay Crowdus hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Trosclair. Harrell hit an infield single to the third baseman to re-load the bases, before Stickrod singled through the left side to score Hadley and Lamb, and close the gap to 5-3.
After a scoreless third inning, Tulsa scored twice in the fourth inning, once in the fifth, and two more times in the sixth to put the visitors with a 10-3 lead.
The Tigers threatened and cut into the deficit in the bottom of the seventh when Stickrod hit an infield single, before being lifted for pinch-runner Breana Valenzuela. The next batter – Johnson – hit a two-run home run to cut the gap to five; however, the Tigers would not get another baserunner in the five-run loss.
Every Memphis starting player had at least one hit in the opener, led by Stickrod's three hits in four plate appearances. Stickrod and Johnson each drove in two, as each of the team's five runs came from a different player.
Molly Smith picked up the loss, going just one-third of an inning before being lifted in the top of the first inning after allowing the three-run home run. Calli Irvin pitched the next three and two-thirds of an inning and allowed four runs (three earned) before Katie Brignac closed out the game, pitching the final three innings and giving up two runs.
Tulsa was led by Morgan Neal who went 3-for-4, while Maggie Withee was 3-for-5 at the plate. Withee, Julia Hollingsworth, and Estocado each scored twice. Caitlin Sill went the distance for the Golden Hurricane, giving up 11hits and five runs, striking out two and walking just one, improving to 16-8 on the season.
After an inning and a half of scoreless softball in the second game, the Tigers squeezed two runs across in the bottom of the second inning. After back-to-back strikeouts, Trosclair hit a double down the left field line, before Brittany Seale was walked.
A bunt single by Lamb loaded the bases. Crowdus drew a bases-loaded walk to push Trosclair across the board, before Hannah Harrell singled down the left field line to score Seale, and give the Tigers a 2-0 advantage.
Tulsa loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the fourth inning; however, a looking strikeout to Jodi Edmiston ended the threat and kept the visitors off of the scoreboard.
After being threatened in the top of the fourth inning, the Tigers took advantage of a throwing error from Tulsa starter Emily Watson, whose two-out throw to first baseman Tori Stafford was off the mark, allowing Lamb and Crowdus – each of whom reached base on walks – to cross the plate.
With Memphis having doubled up its lead with the two runs in the fourth, Tiger starting pitcher Christian Novak relaxed, and retired six of her next seven batters.
Memphis used two-out magic for the fifth and final run when Johnson scored after relief pitcher Lexi Blevins walked three straight batters, scoring the freshman that had singled to lead off the inning, and give Memphis the 5-0 lead.
Tulsa put two runners on base in the top of the seventh, but the hosts made use of two strong defensive plays – a running catch deep in the gap for center fielder Crowdus before the junior crashed into the padded outfield wall, and a scoop-throw from second baseman Brooke Lee, to keep the shutout intact in the series split.
Memphis made good use of its four hits, as each of the team's four runs and three RBI's came from different batters. Novak struck out one over her seven innings, while giving up four hits and three walks, improving to 4-5 on the season.
Tulsa had four hits – all from different batters, while Emily Watson fell to 10-8 on the season as she gave up four hits and five runs (three earned) over four and two-thirds of an inning. She struck out seven and walked five. Relief pitcher Blevins did not allow a hit in her inning and a third; however, she walked four and threw two wild pitches.
