Softball Sweeps Youngstown State

Tigers remain undefeated at home with Tuesday sweep.
"I'm proud of our pitchers for doing what we needed to do. Our staff did a good job of working ahead and keeping us in the game," Head Coach Natalie Poole said.
Game one was a slugfest, with the Tigers knocking out 15 hits and scoring 13 runs in a 13-5 victory. With the game tied at three, Memphis hit the bottom of the third and went to work on Penguin starting pitcher Caitlyn Minney. Brittany Seale, who would go 5-for-6 in the two games on Tuesday, drew a walk and moved to second on a Lindsey Stickrod single. Brooke Lee loaded the bases for Memphis and on a wild pitch, Seale scored to break the tie. Another wild pitch would score Stickrod, who had advanced to third on the first wild pitch, and Tyler Johnson would draw a walk to again load the bases, chasing Minney out of the circle. Relief pitcher Paige Geanangel got the groundout, but not before Lee would score, giving Memphis a 6-3 lead. Geanangel would give up another walk to load the bases, but got Maxwell on a strikeout and Kyler Trosclair on a flyout to get out of the inning.
YSU got a run back in fourth inning and in the fifth, Memphis starter Bayleigh Wisher loaded the bases and was lifted for Calli Irvin with no outs. Irvin got a flyout, which still scored one run and cut Memphis' lead to 6-5. But Hannah Harrell made a diving grab in left field and with two runners on, Memphis recovered from an error on a throw from short on a fielder's choice when Lee looked home and saw the runner trying to score, nailing her at the plate to end the inning with a one run lead.
Memphis tacked on three runs at the bottom of the fifth and four at the bottom of the sixth to get the run-rule win, 13-5. Trosclair was 3-for-5 with an RBI, while Seale with 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Wisher picked up the win to go to 4-1 on the season while Irvin picked up her first save, not giving up any hits to the five batters she faced.
Game two was an entirely different game. The two teams breezed through the first four innings with Youngstown State's lone run in the second inning looking like it could be the deciding factor.
But heading in to the bottom of the sixth, Memphis took the lead. After Jessie Lamb singled to open the inning, Seale executed a perfect bunt that rolled down the first base line and stayed fair as she reached the bag. Regan Hadley came on to pinch run for Seale and when Stickrod singled up the middle, Hadley moved to second while Lamb scored to tie the game. Tyler Johnson then knocked out her second career double to score both Stickrod and Hadley and pushed Memphis up 3-1.
That chased pitcher Lexi Zappitelli from the game, but after a flyout for the first out of the inning, Johnson and Lee would both advance on a wild pitch and Harrell would draw a walk to load the bases. Memphis tacked on a fourth run in the inning before lining in to a double play to take a 4-1 lead to the top of the seventh.
Youngstown State got one run back in the seventh. Cali Mikovich singled to center and advanced to second on a Katie Smallcomb single. A double steal put both runners in scoring position and a groundout to second base scored Mikovich and moved Smallcomb over to third. But Katie Brignac, pitching her first complete game of the season, got pinch hitter Demi Ann Patonis with a swinging strikeout and lead-off hitter Sarah Dowd flew a ball to foul territory on the third base side, where Johnson closed out the win for Memphis.
Brignac would fan four and gave up just two runs, both earned, as Memphis moved to 8-14 on the year. The complete game effort was her first of the season.
"Katie had a pretty good performance last weekend at LSU and she did a good job of backing that up today, giving up just one walk," Poole said.
Memphis is in action this weekend at the Chanticleer Classic at Coastal Carolina. Memphis will face Buffalo and Furman on Friday, then Furman and Coastal Carolina on Saturday and will finish against Buffalo, Sunday.
"We've had to move some people around defensively just due to some injuries, so we're just looking to play a clean game and give our pitchers some opportunities," Poole said.
The second game win against YSU was error-free for Memphis, its first since the win over Nicholls State at the Mississippi tournament for Memphis.
The Tigers will be back home Mar. 19th, hosting Cleveland State (1 p.m.) and Northern Kentucky (3 p.m.) at the Tiger Softball Complex. Admission to the home games is free.
