Mar 11, 2016 | Softball
Johnson's grand slam the difference in an 11-7 win over Buffalo.
In a back-and-forth affair, Memphis came from 5-3 down with a three-run fourth inning. After Kyler Trosclair and Jessie Lamb both drew walks and executed a double-steal, Brittany Seale singled, scoring both Trosclair and Lamb and moving herself to second as Buffalo failed to get a play at the plate. With the score now tied, Buffalo lifted starting pitcher Charlotte Miller. But Lindsey Stickrod singled off the new pitcher, Lace Smith, moving Seale over to third. Memphis inserted pinch runners for both Tigers, but Breana Valenzuela was caught stealing, wiping out the Memphis base runner at second. Johnson, who would hit the slam in the seventh, then doubled with two outs, scoring pinch runner Christen Torres for a 6-5 Memphis lead.
Memphis had stretched its lead to 7-5 with another run in the sixth, but Buffalo had an answer. At the beginning of the sixth inning, Memphis had swapped in pitcher Calli Irvin. She walked the first batter she faced, then gave up back-to-back doubles, tying the game at seven. But Irvin shut it down after that, inducing a pop up and two ground outs to get out of the inning with the game tied.
Like Memphis, Buffalo insert a new pitcher at the beginning of a new inning, bringing in Ally Power to start the seventh. Trosclair singled off Power, beating out the bunt and moved to second on a Lamb ground out. Seale then singled and advanced to second and Brooke Lee drew a walk to load the bases for Johnson's homer. The four runs pushed Memphis up 11-7, and when the Tiger defense came back on the field, it was three-up, three-down for the Bulls, improving Memphis to 9-14 on the year.
The win was the first of the year for Irvin, who improves to 1-1 on the season. In 5.1 innings, she allowed three hits, all earned, striking out two. Trosclair and Seale each went 2-for-4 at the plate. Johnson would finish her day 2-for-5 with five RBI, while Seale would account for three RBI of her own. Both Trosclair and Lamb scored twice atop the batting order and Trosclair added two stolen bases.
The afternoon game also shaped up to need some Tiger heroics to come back from a deficit. After leading Furman 2-0 through three innings, Memphis gave up four runs in the fourth to trail 4-2. Memphis would get an answer on board in the fifth, when Seale singled to drive in Trosclair for a 4-3 deficit, but Furman would get a groundout to get out of the inning with a 4-3 lead.
After Molly Smith got a strikeout, flyout and groundout around a double in the top of the seventh inning, Memphis came to bat with three outs to try to tie the game.
Things started off in Memphis' favor when Trosclair doubled down the left field line, chasing Demonte out of the circle. Lamb was not fazed by the new hurler, sacrificing a bunt to move Trosclair to third, but facing Memphis' three and four hitters, Bert got a strikeout looking and a groundout to fend off the Tiger comeback.
Katie Brignac took the loss for Memphis, pitching 3.1 innings and giving up four runs, all earned, on six hits and three walks. She struck out two of the 19 batters she faced. Demonte would get the win for Furman, while Bert would get the save, her third of the season.
Trosclair was 3-for-4 for Memphis and scored two of the team's three runs. Seale had two RBI in the loss that drops Memphis to 9-15 on the year.
Memphis will play another two games at the Chanticleer Challenge on Saturday. Memphis is scheduled to face Furman again at 12:15 p.m. (ET), and then faces hosts Coastal Carolina in the next game at 2:30 p.m. (ET).
