MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis men's tennis team (10-8) split a pair of home matches on Thursday. The Tigers played their first home match in almost two months, hosting #42 ranked Dartmouth outside at The Racquet Club of Memphis, and falling 4-0, then bouncing back with a 7-0 win over Jackson State in the nightcap.
The visitors came at Memphis right from the jump in the first match outside, taking leads at one and two doubles. Memphis had jumped out to a lead of its own at three doubles, but the team of Max Fliegner and Dovydas Sakinis came back for the 6-4 win. The team of Ryan Peniston and Felix Rauch came from 4-1 down in their match at two doubles to pull close at 5-4 down, but Dartmouth grabbed the 6-4 win at one to take an early lead.
"The doubles point, that wasn't our best doubles point," Head Coach Paul Goebel said. "I give Dartmouth credit, they really fought hard and competed well. They played very well and looked like they wanted the doubles point today. The conditions were tough, but it just didn't go our way today, but we'll learn from it and keep working hard."
In singles, Dartmouth pushed its lead to 3-0 with wins at six and four singles in straight sets. Andrew Watson, Ryan Peniston and Felix Rauch all ended up winning first set tiebreakers, including a 12-10 win for Watson in his first set breaker, but both Watson and Rauch dropped their second sets to go to a third set. That gave George Wall enough time to close out a win over Kai Lemke, also in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 for the win. The other matches were abandoned with the match decided and Memphis hosting Jackson State later in the evening.
In the nightcap, Memphis won the doubles point in under 25 minutes with a pair of 6-0 wins at one and two, then did not drop a set in the 7-0 sweep.
Memphis will again host a doubleheader on Saturday. The Tigers will host conference foe Temple at 9 a.m., Saturday, then will close the afternoon against UAPB at 3 p.m. Both matches will be played at The Racquet Club of Memphis and admission is free.
