Brittany Seale drives in three runs in loss
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A two-run third inning tied the Memphis Tigers with the Ole Miss Rebels on the softball diamond on Tuesday evening; however, the Tigers gave up five runs over the fourth and fifth innings, paving way to the 7-3 loss at the Tigers Softball Complex.
Junior catcher Brittany Seale was 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI's, while Kyler Trosclair went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Each of Memphis' three runs came from different players – Trosclair, Lindsay Crowdus, and Tyler Johnson.
The loss for Memphis (16-16) snaps a seven-game overall win streak and a seven-game home win streak – the latter of which is a new Memphis record for consecutive home wins to open the season. The Tigers next host the UConn Huskies in a three game series starting on Thursday, March 24 with a 5 p.m. first pitch at the Tigers Softball Complex.
Ole Miss (25-7) opened the game strong, starting with a leadoff single from Elantra Cox who advanced to second and scored on a wind-blown single off the bat of Courtney Syrett that started near second base and landed just fair of the first base bag. Miranda Stother, who reached base when she was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on the Syrett single, scored when an errant pick-off throw sailed into center field, putting the visitors ahead early.
The next four half-innings were scoreless, including a five-pitch third inning for Memphis starter Christian Novak that included a strikeout.
The Tigers evened the score in the third inning when the hosts got some two-out magic with a walk to Johnson, an infield single from Trosclair, and another infield single from Jessie Lamb to load the bases. Seale followed with a driving single to right field that saw Johnson and Trosclair to score and tie the game at two runs apiece.
Ole Miss answered quickly in the fourth with three runs, including a two-run double off the bat of Alex Schneider. The visitors added two more runs in the fifth inning on a bases-loaded hit by pitch and after a lineout double play, a single down the left field line.
The Tigers threatened in the fourth and fifth innings to no avail; however, were able to squeeze a run across in the seventh inning when Crowdus opened the inning with a single up the middle. A groundout advanced her to second, while a sacrifice bunt moved her and Trosclair to third and second, respectively. Seale, who had the two-run hit in the third inning followed with a sharp single to right field, driving in Crowdus; however, a pop-up to the second baseman a batter later closed the door on the comeback attempts.
Novak pitched the first four innings, giving up seven runs (six earned) while striking out four and walking three. Her counterpart, Elisha Jahnke pitched six innings and scattered five hits while giving up two runs and striking out three.
