Tigers Outslugged by Murray State
Mar 22, 2016 | Baseball
Racers hit two doubles, two triples and a home run to beat Memphis
Memphis (8-12) will continue its road trip this weekend with a three-game series at Southern Illinois that runs Thursday through Saturday.
The game was back-and-forth through the early innings before Murray State put up a four-run bottom of the third inning. The Tigers cut the Racers' lead to one in the top of the sixth before they came right back with another four-run inning to put the game away.
First baseman Jacob Elliott stayed hot, going 2-for-3 with an RBI double and a run scored. He had the Tigers' only extra-base hit in the game.
Murray State snagged an early lead after a leadoff walk to start the game and an RBI triple by left fielder Adam Bauer to deep right field. An RBI groundout drove in Bauer and made the Racers' lead 2-0 to end the first inning.
Memphis managed to get the leadoff man on in both of the first two innings with singles by center fielder Darien Tubbs and designated hitter Andy Bowman.
The Tigers were able to get on the board in the second though as first baseman Jacob Elliott doubled down the right field line to score Bowman.
The Tigers took their first lead of the game with two runs in the top of third inning. With one out in the frame, Tubbs worked a walk and third baseman Zach Schritenthal singled to put runners on the corners.
Left fielder Chris Carrier chopped one back to the pitcher that looked liked it would be a double play ball but he was able to beat the throw back to first and tie the game.
After a two-out walk by Bowman, right fielder Jake Little dropped down a perfect bunt to drive in Schritenthal from third and make the score 3-2.
Memphis starting pitcher James Muse loaded the bases in the third with two walks and a hit batter and that ended his day.
Reliever Jonathan Bowlan quickly got the first two outs, allowing just one run on a sacrifice fly, but a two-out, three-run home run by designated hitter Jack Hranec gave Murray State a 6-3 lead.
Memphis cut into the Murray State lead in the top of the sixth. Little legged out his second infield single of the game to start things and Elliott was hit by a pitch with one out. A wild pitch moved the runners into scoring position and catcher Corey Chafin legged out an infield single to drive in a run. A dropped infield pop up allowed another run to come home and make the score 6-5.
Bowlan got into a jam in the sixth after a pair of singles started the inning but he was able to cut down the lead runner on a sacrifice bunt attempt.
The Tigers then turned to Drew Crosby out of the bullpen with two runners on base and one out. Crosby allowed a triple, a single and a double that extended the Murray State lead out to 9-5.
Trey McNickle was called on and the Racers immediately greeted him with an RBI single that drove in another run to make the score 10-5. The senior right-hander was able to get a fly out to end the inning.
Memphis loaded the bases with one out in the eighth but could only manage one additional run. The Tigers then loaded the bases again in the ninth but couldn't score.
