Molly Smith records her second seven-inning shutout of the season
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Sophomore starting pitcher Molly Smith was stellar inside the circle for the Memphis Tigers on Sunday afternoon (March 20), striking out eight and walking just one in a 7-0 Tiger win over the Northern Kentucky Norse.
The Tiger seven-game win streak is the fourth longest in the 10-year history of the program, and Memphis improves to 16-15 on the year.
The win improves Smith's record to 4-6 on the season, and gives her 52 strikeouts in 70 innings of work to go with her 3.00 ERA. She allowed just three hits in the game, and four total baserunners – none past the fourth inning.
The lion's share of the Memphis offense came from the bottom third of the lineup, as the seven, eight, and nine batters scored five of the team's seven runs in the contest. Jessie Lamb went 2-for-3 for the Tigers, while the team's No. 9 hitter, Lindsay Crowdus was also 2-for-3. Crowdus and No. 7 batter Hannah Harrell each scored two runs in the win. The team had three RBI's, one each from Lamb, Brooke Lee, and Crowdus.
After Smith struck out the side to open the game, Memphis wasted little time to reach the scoring column when leadoff hitter Kyler Trosclair reached on a walk, was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, reached third on a wild pitch and scored when Lee hit a soft single to center field, putting the Tigers ahead 1-0.
Memphis added some distance in the second inning when Harrell led off with a walk and followed with a stolen base, her 18th of the season – tied for the second most in a single-season in program history. A single by Crowdus put runners on first and second, before Trosclair grounded out to the first baseman to moved the runners up a base. Lamb followed with a single through the right side that scored Harrell, putting Memphis ahead 2-0.
After Brittany Seale was hit by a pitch, Stickrod reached base on a throwing error by the Norse, which allowed two runs to score and take the margin to 4-0 after two innings.
Neither team could find the scoring column in the third and fourth innings, before the Tigers added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Crowdus opened the scoring in the inning with an RBI double to center field to score Harrell. Trosclair's at-bat in the inning saw a ground ball go between the legs of the NKU second baseman, allowing Crowdus and Tyler Johnson to score – the second time in the game that Memphis scored two runs off of a Norse error.
Neither team would score in the sixth inning, as Smith retired NKU in order in the top of the seventh to secure the 7-0 Tiger win.
NKU's three hits came from three different batters, and didn't have a player reach third base in the contest. Charlie Nolen picked up the loss, lasting two innings and allowing four runs (two earned) and walked two.
The Tigers put their win streak on the line when the squad hosts the Ole Miss Rebels, who are 24-7 this season after losing two in a row at No. 13 Kentucky over the weekend.
