Tigers Sail Past Vikings and Norse to Even Record
Mar 19, 2016 | Softball
Brooke Lee led the Tigers with 5 RBI and 2 home runs on the day
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Behind a stellar all-around performance where the Tigers hit three home runs, while limiting its opponents to five total runs, Memphis swept through a pair of games on Saturday afternoon with a 5-4, eight-inning win over the Cleveland State Vikings and a 9-1, six-inning win over the Northern Kentucky Norse.
The win runs Memphis' win streak to six games, the fifth-longest win streak in the 10-year history of the program, and evens the team record at 15-15 on the season.
Brooke Lee was 3-for-5 on the day with two home runs and five RBI's, scoring twice and adding a double. Lindsay Crowdus was 3-for-6 with an RBI, while Lindsey Stickrod was 3-for-7 with two runs scored, and a two-run home run in the afternoon finale.
The opening game saw the return of sophomore pitcher Christian Novak, who had missed the entire 2015 season after a back surgery that saw her featured on the national television show "The Doctors". The Nevada, Missouri, native wasted little time in acclimating herself back into the collegiate ranks as she struck out the first two batters she faced, and fanned eight total in the eight-inning complete-game.
After both teams opened the game with two scoreless innings, the Tigers struck first in the bottom of the third inning when Kyler Trosclair opened the frame with an infield single, and then stole second base. An infield single from Jessie Lamb kept Trosclair at second, before the pair successfully converted a double-steal. A shallow sacrifice fly off the bat of Brittany Seale allowed Trosclair to score; however, on the play Lamb was picked off of second base, and the Tigers were only able to squeeze one run across.
The teams shared a scoreless fourth inning, before Trosclair once again kick-started the Tiger offense as she drew a one-out walk in the fifth. A wild pitch and a single put runners on first and second, before Seale singled into left field, scoring Trosclair and putting runners on second and third. Following a pop-up, Lee doubled home Lamb and pinch-runner Breana Valenzuela to put the Tigers ahead 4-0.
Another scoreless inning followed, before the visitors strung together a series of at-bats in the top of the seventh that included a strikeout, a walk, another strikeout, another walk, and a fielder's choice to load the bases. Cleveland State's Riley Ries followed with her first home run of the season – a grand slam – tying the game at four runs apiece. Novak induced a strikeout of the next batter to close the door on the inning.
An unsuccessful attempt at a game-winner in the seventh inning was followed by the Vikings recording only a solitary hit in the top of the eighth. In the Memphis half of the eighth inning Lindsay Crowdus opened by drawing a walk, and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. A groundout advanced her to third, and the Tigers then caught a break when the two-out ball off the bat of Seale was mishandled by the Viking shortstop, allowing Crowdus to score and give the Tigers the win.
Trosclair was a perfect 2-for-2 in the opener, while Lamb and Seale were each 2-for-4. Seale and Lee drove in two apiece, as Trosclair scored two runs, including the game-winner. Novak struck out eight on the day, walking five and giving up six hits and four earned runs.
Cleveland State had six hits from six different batters, and committed three errors in the game. Macy Kaisk pitched for six and two-thirds of an inning, walking five and striking out one, falling to 2-4 on the season.
In the nightcap, Northern Kentucky threatened early, using back-to-back singles and a wild pitch to put runners on second and third; however, a strikeout by starting pitcher Katie Brignac closed the door on the opportunity.
The Norse got only a single hit in the top of the second, while Lee hit her third home run of the season over the wall in left-center field, giving the Tigers the narrow advantage.
Tyler Johnson and the Tigers made use of the only error of the second game, a misplay of a ground ball to the shortstop to put the Memphis freshman at second base, and was advanced to third on a groundout by Crowdus. A Trosclair ground ball to the second baseman saw Johnson score the eventual game-winning run, putting the Tigers ahead 2-0.
In the fourth inning Stickrod reached with a one-out single before Lee hit a two-run home run a batter later to stake the Tigers to a 4-0 lead. Northern Kentucky cut into the deficit with a run in the sixth inning; however, the Tigers answered back in a big way in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The hosts batted around in the inning, starting with Lamb being hit by pitch. A fielder's choice eliminated Lamb, before Stickrod hit her fourth home run of the season, putting Memphis ahead 6-1. Following a pitching change, Lee and Regan Hadley were walked, before Lee was put out on a fielder's choice at third base. Johnson singled up the middle to score Hadley, before Crowdus followed with the same to score Harrell. Trosclair loaded the bases when she was hit by a pitch, before Lamb drew a bases-loaded walk-off walk to give the Tigers an eight-run lead, evoking the run-rule shortened margin.
Lee was a perfect 2-for-2 in the afternoon finale, while Stickrod and Crowdus were each 2-for-3. The same trio each scored twice, while Lee led the team with three RBI's.
Katie Brignac picked up the win, improving to 3-4 on the year, while Calli Irvin picked up her second save of the season.
The Tigers and Norse meet up for the weekend finale on Sunday afternoon in a noon first pitch at the Memphis Softball Complex.
