Memphis has had a strong run of games in the Sunshine state. The Tigers have lost just once in a game played in Florida since on January 18, 2012, a 9-1 overall record during that span, including a tournament win in the Old Spice Classic in Orlando during the 2013-14 season, and an exciting overtime win over Ohio State in Miami earlier this season. Since 2001, the Tigers are 17-2 in Florida.
Ā
Announced on Tuesday afternoon, Memphis senior Shaq Goodwin has been named to the American Athletic Conference First Team, and freshman Dedric Lawson earned a Second Team honor. The two honors mark the fourth and fifth All-American Athletic Conference honor earned by the Tigers in the three years in the league.
Ā

Ā
The meeting between Tulane and Memphis is the first time as members of the American Athletic Conference that the teams have met in the postseason tournament. That does not mean that the two schools have never met in postseason play, asĀ the teams have met seven times, including four times over a four-year span as members of Conference USA - all Memphis wins. The first post-season meeting came on March 3, 1977 in the first round of the Metro Tournament - a 94-80 Tiger win in Memphis. The next postseason meeting came 14 years later in 1991 - also in the Metro Tournament - an 84-77 win in Roanoke, Virginia. The opening meeting as members of Conference USA came in 2006, a 75-56 Tiger win in Memphis. A year later Memphis picked up a second round win over the Green Wave by a score of 71-49. A first round meeting came in 2008 with a 75-56 Memphis home win, and a season later the Tigers edged out Tulane 51-41 - again in Memphis. The fifth and final postseason tournament meeting came from the 2012-13 season - Memphis' final season in Conference USA - as the Tigers topped the Green Wave 81-68 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Ā
With Memphis head coach Josh Pastner, it has been all or nothing in the Tigers' conference tournament appearances. His first season as head coach the team went 0-1 in the 2010 Conference USA Tournament. In 2011, 2012, and 2013 the Tigers went a combined 9-0, winning back-to-back-to-back C-USA Tournament Titles. In 2014 and 2015 the Tigers fell in their tournament openers. In all, Pastner is 10-3 in conference tournaments.
Ā
Memphis senior forward Shaq Goodwin, through his four years with the program, has played in at least 30 games every season, including 31 so far this season, and 132 for his career. As long as he sees action in Memphis' game against Tulane in the AAC Tournament semifinal, he will climb into a tie for ninth in school history in career games played.
Ā
This season, the Memphis men's basketball program has made 611 free throws, over 100 more than its opponents, while attempting 848. The make total ranks fifth in school history, while the attempts number stands 64 away from fifth place.
Ā
Ā
Memphis freshman Dedric Lawson will have his name mentioned many times in the upcoming game notes, but the lead-off for this set of notes comes from his prowess in the scoring column. This season he is averaging 15.4 points, which leads the 2015-16 Tigers. If he leads the team at the end of the season, he will become just the eighth freshman in school history to lead the team in scoring. He would join the group of Dexter Reed (1973-74), Keith Lee (1981-82), Lorenzen Wright (1994-95), Dajuan Wagner (2001-02), Sean Banks (2003-04), Tyreke Evans (2008-09), and Will Barton (2010-11) as freshman players who led the team in the scoring column.
Ā
Memphis and Tulane have met 58 times on the basketball court, with the Tigers holding a 45-11 all-time lead (not counting two Memphis wins vacated during the 2008-09 season). The two teams split the season series, with each team winning on its home court. Below is the breakdown of the all-time series between the two programs.
Ā
With his 77 made three-pointers this season, junior guard Avery Woodson is quickly etching his name as one of the top long-range shooters in Memphis basketball history. His three-point total this season currently ranks fifth in school history, and his career makes total of 138 stands five away from No. 10 on that list, currently occupied by Elliot Perry. His career three-point percentage of .405 stands third all-time, and his single-season percentage stands fifth in school history.
Ā
Ā
Ā
With his game against East Carolina, Memphis senior Shaq Goodwin became just the third player in Memphis basketball history to score 1,400 or more points, pull down 800 rebounds, and block 190 shots in a career. Goodwin, who has 1,418 points, 846 rebounds and 195 blocked shots, joins Keith Lee (2,408 points/1,336 rebounds/320 blocks) and Kelly Wise (1,487 points/1,075 rebounds/226 blocks) as the only players in Memphis basketball history to reach the trio of plateaus.
Ā
Not only is Dedric Lawson's double-double total among the best in the country, and second-most by a freshman in program history, it is also tied for the 10th-highest single-season total in school history.
Ā
Similarly to the long range record attack from Avery Woodson, the senior duo of Shaq Goodwin and Ricky Tarrant Jr. are making a full-out assault on the school record books at the charity stripe. Goodwin's career free throw total of 394 made ranks as the seventh-most in a career in school history, and is 42 makes away from taking sole possession of sixth overall. Goodwin's 156 free throws rank ninth in a single-season in school history, while Tarrant's total of 140 stands 16 behind Goodwin and Keith Lee for ninth overall.
Ā
Against Ohio State on November 27, Memphis senior forward Shaq Goodwin became the 50th member of the program's 1,000-point club with an ally-oop dunk with eight minutes remaining in the first half. He now has 1,421 career points, which puts him 14th in the school record book, and stands 22 away from climbing into sole possession of 13th all-time.
Ā
With his 15 rebounds against Ole Miss Shaq Goodwin climbed into the top-10 in program history in career rebounds.
Ā Ā
Keeping with the theme of climbing up the record books, Shaq Goodwin has 195 career blocked shots, and stands in seventh place in program history.
Ā
The Memphis scoring duo of Shaq Goodwin and Dedric Lawson are tied for the highest scoring pair in the American Athletic Conference this season, just ahead of the Tulsa tandem of James Woodard and Shaquile Harrison. The Houston duo of Rob Gray and Devonta Pollard stand three-tenths of a percentage point behind.
The Tigers' rebounding duo of Dedric Lawson and Shaq Goodwin combine to stand nearly two rebounds ahead of the next closest duo in the American Athletic Conference.
Ā Ā
Through 32 games in the season, freshman forward Dedric Lawson has picked up 287 rebounds, which not only leads the team, but sends him in the direction to etch his name as one of the top freshman rebounders in school history. He stands 34 rebounds away from moving into second in school history for freshmen, and his 9.3 rebound per game average currently ranks fourth.
Ā Ā
After games as of March 11, the Memphis Tigers have the eighth-fastest offense in NCAA Division I basketball, averaging 74.6 possessions per game, and have the eighth shortest possession length in the country.
Ā
Of the 12 NCAA Division I teams that make their home in Louisiana, Memphis in its lengthy history have faced off against every one and have a 94-16 overall record. This season alone the Tigers have faced five schools (Grambling State, Louisiana Tech, Nicholls State, Southern, and Tulane) for seven total games against teams in the Bayou State.
