Tigers Battle Into American Conference Championship Game

Tigers top Tulane 74-54 to advance to the AAC Title contest
ORLANDO - Five players reached double-figures in the scoring column for the Memphis Tigers, while the defense held Tulane without a single double-digit effort, as Memphis advanced to the American Athletic Conference title game following a 74-54 win over the Tulane Green Wave in the second of two semifinal games.
In the Championship Game, the Tigers will face the UConn Huskies, who picked up a 77-62 win over the Temple Owls in the opening semifinal contest. Memphis and UConn will tip-off at 2:15 CT in a game broadcast on ESPN.
"I was really proud of our young men," said Memphis head coach JoshĀ Pastner. "We battled, and we did a great job of valuing the ball for the most part in the game. We only had nine turnovers, and one of them was at the end because of me (intentional shot clock violation). At the pace and speed that we play, that's at a high level of us valuing the ball. The bottom line is our play on the defensive end. We're guarding the right way. Over our last few weeks we have gotten back to who we are as a defensive identity, and that's why we are so much better right now."
Dedric Lawson scored a game-high 17 points, hitting 5-of-16 shots from the field and all five of his charity stripe attempts, while Shaq Goodwin hit 7-of-12 shots for 16 points. Three others - Trahson Burrell, Markel Crawford, and Nick Marshall - each scored 10 points in the win. Crawford pulled down 10 rebounds for his first collegiate double-double, as Dedric Lawson grabbed nine. In all, Memphis out-rebounded Tulane 40-to-35.
Lawson dished out a game-best five assists, as the Tigers had 17 assists on the teams' 25 made field goals. Burrell added four helpers, while Crawford gave out three scores. Ricky Tarrant Jr. led the team with three steals, with Lawson, Goodwin, Burrell, and Crawford nabbing two apiece.
The Memphis defense held Tulane to 32.7 percent shooting from the field (18-of-55), and 5-of-22 (22.7 percent) from long range. The Tigers also forced 18 turnovers, committing just nine of their own in the 20-point win.
The Tigers trailed for just 15 seconds in the game, when the Green Wave pulled ahead b a 6-4 score with 16:15 on the clock. Memphis answered quickly with six straight points on a jumper by Crawford and back-to-back lay-ins from Marshall.Ā
After Tulane climbed with within a single point at 12-11, Memphis held the Green Wave without a field goal for the next eight minutes, running off a 11-0 run, pushing ahead to a halftime lead of 31-22.
Memphis came out of halftime firing on all cylinders, running out a 9-2 push out of the halftime gate, and cruised the rest of the way. The margin reached as many as 27, and never dipped below 20 over the final nine minutes of the game.
The game was Memphis' third straight game where the final margin was 20 or more, after a 30-point win over East Carolina in the regular season finale, and a 22-point win over third-seeded Tulsa in the AAC Tournament opener for the Tigers.
Tulane was led by Melvin Frazier and Louis Dabney who each scored eight points, while Malik Morgan pulled down eight rebounds.
