Memphis Sweeps SIUE
Feb 28, 2016 | Baseball
Zach Schritenthal drove in four runs to lead the Tigers offensively
Third baseman Zach Schritenthal had a big day at the plate, going 2-for-5 with a triple and four RBI. The outfield trio of Darien Tubbs, Chris Carrier and Jake Little also had multi-hit games.
Tubbs smashed a home run to lead off the ballgame for Memphis, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead right out of the gate. The bomb marked the third time in Tubbs' career he has led off a game with a homer.
Memphis tacked on three more runs in the third inning to extend the lead out to 4-0. It was Tubbs who got things started with a single for the Tigers in the inning. He promptly stole second base and scored when Schritenthal singled up the middle.
Schritenthal then stole second base and scored when left fielder Chris Carrier doubled to left-center field. Designated hitter Andy Bowman capped off the inning with a double of his own to drive in Carrier.
Ferguson worked out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the fifth inning but managed to keep the Cougars off the board. SIUE scored its first run of the game on a solo home run to lead off the sixth. Ferguson again had to get out of a jam but did so without any more damage.
Memphis blew the game open in the sixth with six runs on six hits, putting the game well out of reach. Carrier started the inning with a double to left field. Pinch-hitter Trent Turner singled to put runners on the corners with the first hit of his Memphis career. With one out Little singled up the middle to score Carrier.
Freshman catcher Jason Santana worked a walk with two outs to load the bases for fellow freshman Colton Neel, who was coming to the plate for the first time as a Tiger. Neel legged out an infield single to drive in a run and keep the inning alive.
The big blow came when Schritenthal ripped a triple down the right field line to clear the bases and make the score 9-1. Second baseman Brandon Grudzielanek capped off the inning with a single to score Schritenthal.
SIUE got two runs back in the top of the seventh off of relief pair Trey McNickle and freshman James Muse, before sophomore Jacob Elliott, making his first appearance of the season, hit a solo home run to make the score 11-3.
The Cougars added two more runs in the eighth inning off of reliever Bryan Cruse, who was also making his Memphis debut.
Drew Crosby pitched a scoreless ninth inning with a strikeout to end the game.
Memphis will next embark on its longest road trip of the season, starting at Ole Miss Wednesday at 3 p.m., before going to Georgia Southern for a weekend series. The Tigers will play two games against Middle Tennessee next week before coming home.
