Rebels capitalizes on seven-run inning
OXFORD, Miss. – Memphis and Ole Miss threw an array of freshman arms, and the Rebels came out on top, 9-7, Wednesday at Swayze Field. The Tigers grabbed a 6-0 lead before Ole Miss was able to use a seven-run third inning to pull out the win.
The Tigers and Rebels used a combined eight freshman pitchers, and every pitch thrown by Memphis was from a true freshman. James Muse started the game and Alex Hicks, Jonathan Bowlan and Colton Neel each tossed in relief.
Muse had a bright start to the game, retiring the Rebels in order in the first inning and striking out the side in the second. The freshman threw just 23 pitches and struck out four batters over the first two perfect innings. He retired the first seven batters of the game.
Right fielder Jake Little gave Memphis an early lead with a three-run home run to left field in the top of the second inning. Designated hitter Andy Bowman and second baseman Brandon Grudzielanek both singled in front of Little. The home run was his first of the season and 10th of his career.
Left fielder Chris Carrier and Bowman started the third inning with back-to-back doubles to make the score 4-0 and chase the Ole Miss starter, James McArthur, from the game. A fifth run came home on a wild pitch when Bowman scampered home with two outs.
Shortstop Jake Overbey helped turn it into a big inning after walks by Little and first baseman Corey Chafin put runners on the corners. Overbey singled to left field to plate Little and make the score 6-0.
The big lead was short-lived though, as Ole Miss put up a seven-run bottom of the third inning on mostly self-inflicted damage by Memphis. Muse got the first out of the inning before things turned south. He walked the next three batters to allow the first run and end his day on the mound.
Fellow freshman pitcher Alex Hicks managed to get a ground ball on the first pitch he threw but an error allowed two more runs to come home. After another walk loaded the bases the Rebels scored on a fielder's choice, two singles and a wild pitch to grab their first lead of the game.
Ole Miss extended its lead in the sixth after a hit batter and two walks loaded the bases. A single to right field made the score 9-6 and ended Hicks' day on the mound.
Memphis turned to another freshman pitcher out of the bullpen, Jonathan Bowlan, who got a groundout to end the threat in the sixth.
The Tigers loaded the bases in the eighth to put some pressure on Ole Miss but the Rebels got a double play to get out of the jam.
Colton Neel pitched around a walk in the eighth to give the Tigers a chance in the ninth.
Carrier hit a solo home run with two outs in the ninth but it wasn't enough to mount a Tigers comeback.
Ole Miss used several freshman pitchers too, with James McArthur starting and Andy Pagnozzi, Connor Green and Brady Feigl relieving him. The Rebels' used a sophomore as their final pitcher, Will Stokes, and he recorded the save.
Memphis will continue the road trip with a three-game weekend series at Georgia Southern starting Friday at 6 p.m. (CT).
