Tiger Softball Drops Opener on Saturday at Gulf Coast Classic
Feb 27, 2016 | Softball
MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis led 4-0 heading in to the bottom of the fourth inning when Southeastern Louisiana (11-4) rallied and scored eight runs in a 10-7 Lions win, Saturday. Memphis (3-10) tried to rally, scoring three runs in the top of the seventh, but could not complete the comeback before time ran out.
Memphis got on the board when freshman Tyler Johnson singled through the left side to open the second inning. She moved to third when both Lindsey Stickrod and Brooke Lee added singles before the first Memphis out. Jessie Lamb then reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Johnson and moving Stickrod to third. After a Tiger strikeout, Kyler Trosclair scored both Stickrod and Lee for a 3-0 lead.
After a flyout, and with the bases loaded, Memphis cut the lead runner down at home for the second out. Memphis got a groundout to strand three runners and escape the inning with its three-run lead intact.
The Tigers added a run at the top of the third after Brittany Seale singled. A Stickrod double advanced Seale to third and she scored on a Lee groundout to short for a 4-0 Memphis lead.
But the bottom of the fourth was not kind to Memphis. Memphis committed three errors from the infield in the inning, while Southeastern Louisiana turned five hits in to eight runs, taking an 8-4 lead.
Memphis tried to answer back in the top of the fifth, as Seale reached on a Lion error, but she was left on base and the Lions came out and their second batter, Kinsey Nichols, drew a walk, then stole second. She advanced to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch to push the Lion lead to 9-4.
Down 10-4 heading in to the final inning, Memphis was down to two outs when the Tiger bats rallied. Stickrod singled to left field with two outs and Brooke Lee struck out swinging, but the ball got past the Lion catcher, and Lee safely reached first, while Stickrod advanced to second. Lee, Stickrod and Maxwell all scored to cut the deficit to 10-7, but Lamb was thrown out at home plate to end the threat, and the game, for the Tigers.
Stickrod led Memphis at the plate, where she was 3-for-4. She and Lee each scored twice, while Trosclair added two RBIs in the loss.
Molly Smith took the loss for Memphis, giving up eight runs, only three earned, in 1.2 innings pitched.
