Softball Closes Tourney With 4-1 Win
Feb 27, 2016 | Softball
Memphis goes 3-1 in Mississippi tournament.
MEMPHIS – After Nicholls (10-5) scored a run in the top of the first inning, the Memphis softball team (4-10) did not allow another baserunner to reach second base in a 4-1 win to wrap up the Tigers' schedule at the Mississippi Gulfport Classic, Saturday.
The visiting team from Nicholls State got on the board in the top of the first inning. Amanda Gianelloni drew a walk and scored when Alexis Huss doubled to right center field. But that was the lone run the Colonels would push across the plate, as Memphis got 18 of the next 22 batters out before they could reach base.
But it was not until the third inning before the offense was able to take advantage of the Tiger defense shutting down the Colonels. Kyler Trosclair drew a walk, then stole second. Hannah Harrell singled, moving Trosclair to third. From there, Trosclair took advantage of a Nicholls wild pitch, scoring to tie the game at one. Brittany Seale then singled, scoring Harrell and giving Memphis the go-ahead run.
Nicholls went three-up, three-down and Memphis took advantage to start the fourth. With one out, Jessie Lamb drew a walk. Some savvy base-running from Lamb helped put another run on the board. Lamb stole second, then advanced to third. An error from the shortstop trying to get Lamb allowed her to score, making the lead 3-1.
Freshman Adriana Morgan held five of the next six batters hitless for Nicholls and the Tigers tacked on an assurance run in the sixth. With two outs, Lamb drew a walk, then advanced to second on a Crowdus single. Trosclair reached on an error and advanced to second as Lamb scored.
But Nicholls pitcher Hannah Haydel, got her 11th Tigers strikeout to end the threat.
Trosclair, Harrell, Seale, Stickrod and Crowdus were all 1-for-3. Lamb scored two of Memphis' four runs.
Morgan picked up the win. In 7.0 innings pitched, she walked two and struck out two.
