Darien Tubbs drives in game-winning run in the seventh
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Darien Tubbs drove in Carlos Williams with an RBI triple in the seventh inning to give Memphis a 4-2 win over SIU Edwardsville Saturday at FedExPark. With the win the Tigers take the series over the Cougars and will go for the sweep Sunday at 1 p.m.
Starting pitcher Connor Alexander stumbled a bit in the first inning, allowing two runs on two hits after he hit the first batter of the game. The sophomore then settled in, retiring the next 17 consecutive batters. He allowed just three hits total in seven innings with six strikeouts.
Alex Hicks pitched a perfect eighth inning in relief before Nolan Blackwood recorded his first save of the season, and the 18th of his career, in a scoreless ninth inning.
Tubbs got the scoring started for Memphis when he doubled off the wall in left field to start the first inning. He advanced to second on a fly out by third baseman Zach Schritenthal and scored on an infield single by left fielder Chris Carrier to cut the SIUE lead to 2-1.
Memphis tied the game up in the bottom of the fourth inning after showing some aggression on the base paths. Second baseman Brandon Grudzielanek singled to right field with one out to get the rally started. With two down in the frame he stole second base and advanced to third when the throw got away.
Shortstop Jake Overbey drove Grudzielanek in with a single to left field to knot the game up 2-2.
In the seventh with the game still tied 2-2, catcher Damo DeMatteo singled to right field with one out. Carlos Williams entered the game as a pinch runner for DeMatteo and promptly stole second base. He scored the go-ahead run when Tubbs lined the triple into the gap in left-center.
Memphis added an insurance run in the eighth when freshman catcher Jason Santana lined an infield single to the shortstop to drive in Grudzielanek.
