Tiger Softball Wins Pair in Gulfport Friday
Feb 26, 2016 | Softball
Memphis to play two more on Saturday in Gulfport.
Memphis 15, Jackson State 2
Memphis was leading 4-2 heading in to the top of the sixth inning when Brooke Lee doubled and was scored by Addison Maxwell, starting a scoring blitz. After three runs scored (Lee, Maxwell, Jessie Lamb), Jackson State changed pitchers, but pitcher Merina Young hit the next Tiger batter, Brittany Seale, and the scoring onslaught continued. Before Jackson State could tally their first out of the inning, Memphis had pushed another four runs across. Lee and Maxwell both scored again in the same inning, with Maxwell scoring on an illegal pitch, and when Memphis grounded out for the end of the inning, the Tigers had scored 11 runs on seven hits, with two errors, stranding one.
Jackson State tried to rally, singling down the left field line to start the bottom of the sixth, and putting a runner on with a fielder's choice. A second runner was put on when Memphis pitcher Bayleigh Wisher hit the next batter, but with a runner on third and two outs, Wisher induced a groundout to first base to pick up her first win of the season. Wisher improved to 1-1 on the season, giving up two runs, both earned while striking out three and walking two.
Maxwell led Memphis with three runs scored, including the pair in the sixth inning, while Seale, Stickrod and Maxwell were all 2-for-3 at the plate. Stickrod and Lee led Memphis with three RBIs each in the win.
Memphis 4, Mississippi Valley State 1
Hannah Harrell went 2-for-2 and scored twice and Molly Smith came in to strike out eight in a 4-1 Memphis win over Mississippi Valley State that saw Memphis have to come from behind for the win.
Mississippi Valley came to bat first and Memphis' Adriana Morgan walked Jahcenda Gar. Memphis got Gar at second base, but Holly Brown, who had reached on the fielders' choice, scored when Alexandra Do tripled for a 1-0 lead. Morgan hit the next batter, but got a ground out and a popup to end the damage with just the one run scored.
MVSU threatened again in the top of the second. With one out, Annaisa Sanc drew a walk and advanced to second on a Kailyn Dunn single. With two runners on, Morgan walked the bases loaded. But the freshman struck out Brown the second time she faced her and induced Do in to a groundout to second base to get out of the jam.
After Memphis went three up, three down in the second inning, the Tigers inserted Molly Smith into the circle and she retired the first three batters she faced to set Memphis up for a two-run third inning.
Jessie Lamb opened the third by reaching due to an error by the MVSU pitcher, then stole second to get in to scoring position. Regan Hadley sacrificed her over to third and Hannah Harrell singled, then advanced to second, recording her third RBI of the year. Brittany Seale then singled, scoring Harrell from second and giving Memphis a 2-1 lead.
That lead would double in the fifth inning. Harrell again singled and a Seale single in the next Tiger at-bat advanced Harrell all the way to third base. Tyler Johnson then fouled out, but Harrell tagged and scored and Seale advanced to third. Facing Lindsay Stickrod, Shyanne Down then blew a pitch past her catcher, which opened the door for Seale to score on the passed ball.
Memphis tried to tack on another run in the sixth inning, advancing Maxwell all the way to third with two outs, but Memphis left two runners stranded and left Smith to close the game out, picking up her eighth strikeout of the night to go with a pair of lineouts for the win.
Smith got the win for Memphis after helping the Tigers come from behind. In five innings, she gave up just one hit with no runs and eight strikeouts.
Memphis closes out the tournament with a pair of Saturday games. Memphis faces Southeastern Louisiana at 3 p.m., then faces Nicholls State in the next game at 5:30 p.m.
