Tigers Win Behind Hathcock Gem

Hathcock tosses seven innings with six strikeouts in win
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Colton Hatchock rebounded nicely from a tough opening day, to toss a seven-inning gem and lead Memphis to a 4-0 win in the series opener with SIU-Edwardsville Friday at FedExPark. Hathcock struck out six batters and allowed just three hits in the home opener for the Tigers.
Andy Bowman got the scoring started for Memphis with his first career home run, a solo shot to right field in the second inning. That would be the only run the Tigers would need though as the pitching staff was dominant.
Hathcock got into one jam in the game, when the Cougars got two runners on with nobody out in the top of the third inning. The sophomore starting pitcher then struck out the next three batters to get out of the frame unscathed.
Memphis added to its lead when shortstop Jake Overbey reached on an error to start the third inning. With two outs third baseman Zach Schritenthal doubled into the gap in left-center to drive in Overbey.
After striking out the side in the third, Hathcock went on to retire 10 straight batters before a walk in the sixth snapped that streak. Hatchock did get a double play to wipe out the runner and end the sixth inning. He finished his day with a perfect seventh inning.
The Tigers added to their lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Left fielder Chris Carrier led off the inning with a bunt single and stole second base. Second baseman Brandon Grudzielanek drove in Carrier with a double to deep center field. Right fielder Jake Little followed with a single to plate Grudzielanek.
Drew Crosby came in to pitch the eighth inning in relief and got a pair of groundouts and a strikeout in a perfect inning.
Nolan Blackwood finished off the game with a scoreless ninth inning, turning a 1-6-3 double play to end the game.
Game 2 of the series gets underway Saturday at 2 p.m. and the series finale is Sunday at 1 p.m.
