Tigers Fall to 24th Ranked Mustangs
Feb 25, 2016 | Men's Basketball
Dedric Lawson scored a game-high 18 points in the loss
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis freshman Dedric Lawson scored a game-high 18 points, hitting 6-of-13 shots from the field, while Ricky Tarrant Jr. added 15 points and seven assists; however, the Memphis Tigers fell by seven to 24th ranked SMU on Thursday night at FedExForum.
For Lawson it was his 20th double-digit scoring effort of the season and Tarrant his 18th. Shaq Goodwin and Avery Woodson each scored eight points, while Trahson Burrell added seven. Nick Marshall pulled down a team-best seven rebounds and blocked a career-high three shots, as Lawson blocked a game-high four shot attempts. Two Tigers – Shaq Goodwin and Ricky Tarrant Jr. – each grabbed four steals in the loss.
Memphis hit 38.9 percent of its shots (27-of-55) from the field, 7-of-23 (30.4%) from long range, and 13-of-22 (59.1%) from the charity stripe. The team had 15 assists on 21 made baskets, while committing 15 turnovers, forcing 16.
The largest lead by either team was seven – the game's final margin – as there were 11 tie scores and 19 lead changes in the back-and-forth effort.
Memphis jumped out to a 3-1 lead to open the contest, and led by five at 12-7 following a Jeremiah Martin fast-break lay-in with 13:18 to play in the contest. SMU rallied to score eight consecutive points, taking a three-point lead; however, the Tigers fought back and a Tarrant three-pointer with eight and a half minutes left in the half put Memphis ahead once again at 18-17.
SMU pushed ahead by six with four and a half minutes remaining in the half, but the Tigers would not back down, and ran off a 9-2 run which gave Memphis a one-point lead on a pair of Goodwin free throws; however, a Jarrey Foster dunk with 41 seconds left in the half sent the Mustangs into the locker room with a one-point, 31-30 lead.
Goodwin opened the second-half scoring with a dunk, and a possession later was followed with a three-pointer from Woodson to give the Tigers a four-point lead.
In the second half alone there were a dozen lead changes, and the largest second half lead by either team through the first 19:40 of the half was four points.
The back-and-forth effort persisted through the game, and Memphis grabbed its final lead of the game on a Burrell jumper with 6:26 to play, before SMU's Shake Milton answered with a three-pointer 17 seconds later.
SMU led by four with 4:11 to play, before the Memphis defense tightened, holding the Mustangs without a point for the next three and a half minutes, while the Tigers chipped into the deficit with a dunk from Lawson. A free throw by Tarrant with 1:37 to play cut the margin to one, and a defensive rebound by Marshall the next time down the floor put Memphis in a position to take its first lead in nearly five minutes.
A Jeremiah Martin three-pointer missed just short, before SMU's Nic Moore drained a running-jumper to put the visitors ahead 65-62. Following a turnover on the next possession, the Mustangs iced the game by hitting four consecutive free throws to give the game its 69-62 final score.
Sterling Brown scored a team-high 14 points for SMU while Moore scored a dozen points – all in the second half – while dishing out six assists and grabbing six steals.
The Tigers return to action on Sunday, February 28, when the team hosts the Tulsa Golden Hurricane in the final home game of the 2015-16 season for Memphis.
